Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Ralston, NE-It was almost fitting that the Omaha Lancers were wearing Halloween themed jerseys Friday night as the game seemed liked a nightmare for the Sioux Falls Stampede who fell 6-3 to the Lancers at Ralston Arena. The game was filled with penalties, a combined 19 power play opportunities for both teams and the Lancers would make the most of their chances. Austin Albrecht, Paul DeNaples and Jason O'Neil all scored in the victory. Jeremy Swayman stopped 18 of 22 shots in goal for the Stampede who fell to 2-2-0 on the season while Omaha earned their first win of the year to improve to 1-4-0.
The Stampede new the Lancers would come out with something to prove and they wasted little time getting on the board, scoring just 1:54 into the contest when Derek Hamelin skated into the right circle and wristed a shot past the glove side of Stampede goaltender Jeremy Swayman to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead. After that the rest of the period was filled with penalties, nine total to be exact. The Lancers took a 2-0 lead on the power play when Marcus Bjork one-timed a pass from Alex Mehnert in the left circle and into the net. Two minutes later the Herd found themselves on a 5-on-3 advantage and it took just seconds for them to connect. Alex Stevens blasted a shot from the high slot that was deflected in by Austin Albrecht for his second of the year. The Lancers took a 2-1 lead into the second with both teams tallying eight shots a piece on the board.
The penalties continued just 40 seconds into the second period with Alex Stevens and Pierce Crawford getting tangled up. In a rare 5-on-5 situation, the Lancers extended their lead to 3-1 at 3:38 when Jacob Paganelli scored on a rebound for the Lancers. Two minutes later the Lancers went back on the power play and once again cashed in. Michael Joyaux shot went off behind the net, but bounced right back in front for Emilio Petterson who quickly knocked the puck past Swayman to give Omaha 4-1 lead. Once again both teams finished with eight shots in the period.
Sioux Falls was hoping for a comeback in the third, but Omaha had other plans as Connor Marshall scored just 4:26 into the period to extend the lead to 5-1. Things went from bad to worse just seconds later as the Lancers struck again when Brannon McManus blasted a shot from the left circle in to the back of the net. Four minutes later the Herd found themselves on yet another penalty kill, but this time it would be the Stampede doing the scoring. Jason O'Neil broke across the Omaha line for a 2-on-1 with Paul DeNaples who slid the puck past Omaha goaltender Peter Thome to make it 6-2. The Herd would add a goal with just a second left when O'Neil was able to slide the puck under the pads of Thome, but the Herd fell 6-3.
Omaha outshot the Herd 26-24 on the night and finished the night 3-for-11 on the power play while the Stampede were 1-for-8. The Stampede were flagged 15 times for 49 penalty minutes while Omaha was whistled with 11 penalties for 41 minutes.
The Stampede will look to bounce back Saturday night when they travel to Sioux City to face the Musketeers at 7:05 PM.
