Madison Capitols News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, OH - The Madison Capitols were shutout for the first time this season as the Youngstown Phantoms skated away with a 2-0 victory in front of 1,310 fans at the Covelli Center on Friday night.
Madison (1-2-0-) sits in eighth place in the Eastern Conference with two points. Youngstown (3-1-0) is tied for first place in the Eastern Conference with six points.
"We lost the game tonight because of our effort," said Capitols' Head Coach and General Manager Garrett Suter. "We were out-worked in all three zones and lost our one-on-one battles all over the ice. The foundation of our team is our work ethic. Collectively, as a group, we didn't have one tonight; and we lost the game."
Forward Austin Pooley opened up the scoring for the Phantoms when he got his stick on a lucky bounce from the back of the net at 16:18 of the first period. Capitols goaltender Daniel Lebedeff went to stop the puck behind the net. The puck bounced off the end boards and right in front of the net. Defenseman Michael Karow was credited with an assist on the first goal of the night.
At 18:05 of the third period, forward Noah Lalonde solidified the Youngstown win while tallying his first of the season. Forward Alex Esposito fed a backhand pass to forward Tommy Apap who one-timed the puck from the high slot. Lebedeff made the initial save, but Lalonde was on the right doorstep and flipped in the rebound for his first goal of the season.
Lebedeff (1-2-0-0) took his second loss of the season stopping 27-of-29 shots. Phantoms goaltender Ivan Kulbakov (2-0-0-0) earned his second win, and first shutout, of the season stopping all 18 shots.
Madison and Youngstown both went 0-for-2 on the power play.
