Omaha Lancers News Release
Ralston, NE - A special teams showdown in Ralston proved to be what the Lancers needed to snap a four-game losing streak defeating Sioux Falls 6-3 Friday night.
Omaha went 3-for-11 on the power play scoring with the man-advantage for the second time after being held scoreless in the first three games. Six different players got on the board for the Lancers, including five scoring their first career USHL goals. Peter Thome recorded his first career USHL win making 23 saves. The win was career victory number 500 for head coach Brian Kaufman.
The Lancers got off to a quick start just like opening night except this time they never looked back. Just under two minutes into regulation defenseman Derek Hamelin took a drop pass from Jack Randl before snapping a shot below the glove of Jeremy Swayman to give Omaha a 1-0 lead.
Shortly after that the parade to the penalty box began. With a 4-on-3 power play opportunity the Lancers capitalized. Marcus Bjork drilled home a one-timer from the top of the right circle doubling the lead. Penalties impacted both sides before the period was done however. Having an advantage of their own, Austin Albrecht redirected a shot from the point through the five-hole of Peter Thome to cut the lead to 2-1.
In the second period the scarcity of 5-on-5 hockey continued. After Jacob Paganelli scored a rare even strength goal the Lancers went back on the power play. Less than two minutes after Paganelli's goal, opportunity presented itself in the form of a 5-on-3 power play. Emilio Pettersen made the Stampede pay, tacking on what would be the eventual game winner at 5:18.
In the third Connor Marshall added an insurance marker when Coby Downs found the Florida native wide open on the back door, pushing the lead to 5-1. Brannon McManus added another power play goal giving him power play goals in back-to-back games for the second time in his USHL career. Sioux Falls got goals from Paul DeNaples and Vitaliy Novytsky in the last 10 minutes of the period to round out the scoring.
Backstopping the Lancers Peter Thome, making his third appearance of the season, recorded 23 saves on 26 shots in the win. Jeremy Swayman made 18 saves on 24 shots in the loss for Sioux Falls.
The Lancers are back in action Sunday evening hosting Tri-City at Ralston Arena. Sunday is the last home game in the month of October for Omaha before the team takes off on an eight-game road trip. Puck drop is set for 5:05 pm.
