Kroon and Conley Combine for Seven RBIs in Extras Loss
August 22, 2021 - Eastern League (EL)
Reading Fightin Phils News Release
The R-Phils dropped an entertaining matchup against the Baysox 11-8, as Matt Kroon and Jack Conley combined to drive in seven of the eight runs scored.
Reading came out of the gates ready to play, as starter Tyler Phillips struck out the first two batters he faced in route to a one-two-three first. Kroon kept the momentum rolling by launching the first strike he saw for a lead-off blast, making it 1-0 after the first inning of play.
Conley brought in two runners with his opposite field RBI in the second to make the score 3-0 after two.
The Baysox plated the next five in the top of the third, making it 5-3 and ending the day for Phillips.
In came Noah Skirrow, who allowed one run in his first inning of work to make it 6-3.
Conley's third RBI of the game came via a groundout in the bottom of the fourth. Kroon followed the R-Phils catcher in the next at bat with his second RBI of the afternoon on a single to make it 6-5 Bowie.
Skirrow would only allow one more run for the rest of his outing, which came up big for the R-Phils. He finished the day with two runs on five hits over four innings pitched.
Skirrow keeping it close was rewarded when Kroon launched his second homer of the game in the bottom of the sixth to tie it up at seven.
Brian Marconi came out of the bullpen in the eighth, and kept it a tied ballgame for the next two innings after only allowing one baserunner while striking out two.
In the bottom of the ninth, Reading was able to get the winning run into scoring position, but could not bring him in, thus sending it to extras.
In the top of the tenth, Zach Warren entered the game, and despite nabbing the automatic runner at the plate, Bowie was able to score one on a solo homer.
The Fightins were able to get the run back in the bottom half, as Bryson Stott brought home the automatic runner from third on a sacrifice fly and send it to the eleventh.
The Baysox scored three runs in the top of the eleventh off Nick Lackney(L, 3-1), who was then relieved by Aneurys Zabala, which made the score 11-8. The R-Phils were unable to respond, losing the extra innings battle 11-8.
