Manchester Monarchs News Release
MANCHESTER, NH â Goaltender Brent Krahn finished with 41 saves and his fifth shutout of the season as the Lowell Lock Monsters beat the Manchester Monarchs, 4-1, before a sellout crowd of 9,916 fans at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday night. The loss put an end to the Monarchs team record 14-game home ice unbeaten in regulation winning streak (13-1-1-0). The Monarchs entered Friday's game as the only team in the American Hockey League without a regulation loss on home ice this season.
With their second straight win over the Monarchs, the Lock Monsters improved to 17-9-1-3 and 38 points on the season. They rank fifth in the Atlantic Division. With their loss, the first place Monarchs dropped to 24-6-2-1 and 51 points in the division. The Monarchs lead the second place Hartford Wolf Pack (23-8-1-2, 49 points) by two points in the division standings. The Wolf Pack edged the Utah Grizzlies, 2-1, on Friday night at the Hartford Civic Center.
Krahn, aided by a strong defensive effort by the Lock Monsters, earned his ninth win of the season (9-4-0). Goaltender Mathieu Garon took the loss, his sixth of the year (16-6-1). The Monarchs veteran netminder remains one win away from 100 in his AHL career.
The Monarchs finished with a season high 11 power play attempts in the game, but failed to score on any of them. Meanwhile, the Lock Monsters registered the game-winning goal while enjoying a man-advantage. Lowell finished 1-for-6 on the power play in the game. Center Mike Zigomanis notched the power play game winner just 32 seconds into the third period. The veteran sniper hammered a drop pass from left wing Colin Forbes by Garon (18 shots, 15 saves). Defenseman Brad Fast also assisted on the play.
Zigomanis collected his second point of the period with an assist on the fourth goal of the season by defenseman Richie Regehr, scored with a blast from the right circle at 13:59 of the period. Right wing Chad Larose also assisted on the insurance tally.
Zigomanis (1-2=3), who now has five goals in four games against the Monarchs this season, added a third point in the final frame when he assisted on an empty net goal from Forbes, scored at 18:47. Right wing Chuck Kobasew also had an assist on the 13th goal of the season for Forbes.
Left wing Chris Schmidt set the tone early in a game that included 114 penalty minutes. Schmidt scored his fourth goal of the season from the left of the crease just 1:06 into the contest. Center David Steckel and right wing George Parros shared assists on the play, with Steckel locating Schmidt from the right circle.
The Lock Monsters tied the game at 1-1 midway through the second period with a goal from Kobasew. Kobasew jammed home his team-leading 17th goal of the season. Defenseman Brad Fast and center Eric Staal assisted.
