Cleveland Barons News Release
EDMONTON, ALBERTA-CANADA - Edmonton's Tony Salmelainen scored three goals to lead the Road Runners to a 5-4 win over the Barons on Friday night at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta. Ryane Clowe registered his second consecutive multi-point game for the Barons with a goal and assist in the losing effort.
The New Year celebration started early for the Barons jumping out to a 1-0 lead just 69-seconds into the first period as Alberta native, Jason Jaffray scored his first AHL goal on a power play. Set up by fellow Alberta natives Shane Joseph and Grant Stevenson, the Barons scored the first goal of the game for the seventeenth time this year. Eighteen seconds later Patrick Rissmiller extended the Barons lead to 2-0 on an assist from Ryane Clowe. The two-goal lead didn't last long with Edmonton's Brad Winchester scoring an unassisted goal to cut the lead in half at the 2:22 mark of the stanza. The Road Runners' top scorer, Tony Salmelainen then scored on a rebound to finish the first period at a 2-2 tie.
The second period started just as quickly as the first with the Barons scoring their second power play goal of the night 35-seconds into the stanza. Clowe wristed a shot between the legs of Edmonton's goaltender, Tyler Moss to re-establish the one-goal lead at 3-2. Once again it didn't take long for Edmonton to respond as Salmelainen blasted home his second of the night 58-seconds after Clowe's goal to tie the game at 3-3. Winchester then scored to give Edmonton their first lead of the night at 4-3, which is how the second period ended.
The third period was quiet with the Barons mustering just six shots on net in their come-from-behind bid. With Dimitri Patzold pulled from the goal for an extra attacker, the Road Runners took advantage putting the game away with an empty net goal. Tony Salmelainen scored registering Edmonton's second hat trick of the season. Nick Bootland scored for the Barons with nine seconds remaining, but it was too little too late with the Barons falling 5-4 in regulation play.
