
Komets Snag Four out of Six Points at Elmira

Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets collected four points out of a possible six in a three-game series at Elmira for week 15 of 2013-14 and improved to 17-14-8 for 42 points after 39 games. The Komets trail first-place Evansville and Cincinnati in the North Division by eight points with 33 games remaining.
The extended visit began with a 4-3 Fort Wayne win at Elmira Friday. It was the first Komet win over Elmira in four meetings and snapped a brief two-game winless streak. Komet goals were scored by Kaleigh Schrock (RW), Scott Fleming (C), Jordon Southorn (D) and Matt Carter (LW). Sy Nutkevitch (C) assisted of Schrock's goal to extend his point streak to four games (1g, 3a).
Saturday the Komets posted their first shutout of the season 4-0 at Elmira. It was Fort Wayne's first shutout since last year when Ken Reiter (36 saves) and the Komets blanked the IceMen at Evansville 1-0 on Jan. 16, 2013. Netminder Ben Meisner earned his second career shutout Saturday stopping 33 shots. Meisner remains unbeaten on the road this season (3-0-0). Brandon Marino scored a pair while Simon Danis-Pepin (D) and Kenton Miller (C) also registered markers. The Komets improved to 9-0-2 when scoring four or more goals in a game.
Sunday the Komets stumbled 4-1 at Elmira to complete the three-game road trip and a stretch of four straight meetings against the Jackals. Chris Auger (C) scored the lone Fort Wayne tally for a team-high 18 goals (tied with Marino) on the season. The Komets are 2-3-1 against Elmira after six meetings and the season series finale is this Friday at Fort Wayne.
He's back -- Netminder Andrey Makarov made his first appearance Sunday since sidelined with an injury Jan. 8. Makarov made 16 saves on 20 shots as his three-game unbeaten streak was snapped with the 4-1 loss.
Komet streak -- Brandon Marino (RW) dished an assist on Auger's goal Sunday at Elmira to extend his point streak to three games (2g, 3a). It's the fourth point streak of the season for Marino of three games or more. He has had previous streaks of nine, seven and five games. Marino has reached 30 assists on the season for the fourth time in his five-year career.
Special K's -- The Komets were successful on 10 of 11 penalty kills for the week and are 28/30 on the penalty kill over the last nine games. The Komets rank third in the ECHL with a 88.1% penalty kill success rate and rank fifth in both home (88.9%) and road (87.3%) PK's.
Komet leaders -- Marino leads the ECHL with 30 assists (T) and 48 points.....Marino and Chris Auger lead the Komets with 18 goals each.....Scott Fleming leads Komet rookies and ranks second among ECHL rookies with 23 assists and 34 points.....Jace Coyle leads Komet defensemen with 18 assists and 22 points (3rd in ECHL).
The week ahead -- The Komets will make their only trip of the season to Wheeling (19-16-6, 44 points) Wednesday when they face the Nailers at 7pm. It will be the third of four meetings this season. The Komets are 0-1-1 against the Nailers after a 5-4 overtime loss in the last meeting Nov. 23 in Fort Wayne. Wheeling leads the Komets by two points in the Eastern Conference and currently holds eighth place in the conference for the final playoff qualifying spot. The Nailers are 4-2-0 in their last six games and are coming off a 3-1 home win Sunday against Cincinnati.
The Komets will complete their season series against Elmira (13-22-4, 30 points) when the Jackals visit Friday for an 8pm faceoff. It will be the first Komet home game since the K's dropped a 5-3 decision against Elmira on Fort Wayne ice Jan. 17. Friday's tilt will complete a stretch of five out of six games against Elmira. The Jackals will host Kalamazoo Wednesday before traveling to Fort Wayne Friday.
Saturday the Komets battle the Cyclones (24-12-2, 50 points) at Cincinnati at 7:35pm. The Komets are 1-0-1 against the Cyclones since a 3-2 win at Cincinnati in the last meeting Nov. 9. The Cyclones enter week 16 tied with Evansville for top spot in the North Division with 50 points. Cincinnati is 1-3-0 since posting a five game win streak.. The 'Clones will host Reading Wednesday and skate at Toledo Friday before making the trip Saturday to Fort Wayne.

Komets of the week -- Marino led the Komets in Elmira with points in each of the three games played (2 goals, 3 assists) and posted a plus-minus of +4. Meisner was unbeaten in both appearances (2-0-0)
and made a total of 63 saves on 66 shots for a 1.50 goals-against average and .955 save percentage for the week.
Friday nights are Marathon nights -- Continuing this year, Friday nights are Marathon Nights at Komet home games. Fans can take advantage of buy-one-get-one-free ticket offers for any Friday night Komet home game including this Friday night when the Komets host the Elmira Jackals at 8:00. Fill-Up Cards are available at all participating Marathon stations.
Comcast Report Card Night -The annual Comcast Report Card Night is Friday, Feb. 14 when the Komets host the Cincinnati Cyclones at 8:00. All area students who receive at least one "A" on their report card are rewarded with a free ticket to the game courtesy of Comcast. Students may present a copy of their report card with an "A" or "A equivalent" or a letter from their teacher or school administrator indicating an acceptable level of academic success at the Coliseum Ticket Office in order to get their ticket. Tickets can be claimed anytime in advance of the game Feb. 14. The Komets encourage students to get their tickets early as a large crowd is expected. Comcast Xfinity pledges a donation for each "A" student attending the game with all proceeds going directly to the Literacy Alliance.

Sound Off with the Komets Monday Nights on 21Alive
Tonight's show moved to 21Alive studios -- The Komets, 21Alive and title sponsor PHP present Sound Off with the Komets, a live weekly televised sports program each Monday night during the Komet season at 7:30pm on WPTA TV 21Alive. The half-hour show is usually televised from Champions Bar and Restaurant in downtown Fort Wayne. However due to the extreme cold weather, tonight's broadcast will be held at the 21Alive studios. The show features highlights, interviews and call-ins as Komet players and personnel serve as co-hosts with 21Alive's Tommy Schoegler. Tonight, Monday, Jan. 27, left wing Mike Embach will be Tommy's guest.
