Looking Back
Monday, January 20: Wheeling 2 @ Gwinnett 0 - L In their earliest game of the year, the Gwinnett Gladiators were held scoreless against the Mike Condon and the Wheeling Nailers in a 2-0 loss Monday afternoon at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Starter Brad Phillips was impressive in the Gwinnett (15-23-1-2) crease, making 35 saves on 36 shots, but it was Cody Sylvester's shorthanded tally in the second that sealed it for the visitors.
Thursday, January 27: Gwinnett 3 @ Orlando 4 - L Coyotes prospect Josh Currie scored twice, and Matt Clune picked up two assists in his Gwinnett debut, but the Gladiators fell 4-3 Thursday night at the Amway Center to the Orlando Solar Bears. Mathieu Corbeil made 24 saves in a losing cause in his first start between the pipes for Gwinnett (15-24-1-2), while Maple Leafs prospect Christopher Gibson made 19 saves, while Taylor Matson racked up two goals for the Solar Bears (21-13-1-2).
Glads Notes
Currie-ing Favor: Coyotes prospect Josh Currie has been on quite a roll in the month of January. The forward has 11 points (7 goals, 4 assists) in 12 games this month, and is coming off a two-goal effort in Orlando last week.
New Netminders: Gwinnett shook things up in the crease last week, releasing Paul Karpowich and Brad Phillips, and bringing in Mathieu Corbeil and Scott Stajcer. Stajcer was assigned by the New York Rangers, after spending time in Greenville and Florida earlier this season. Corbeil (pronounced cor-BAY) was send to the Gladiators from the Utica Comets of the American Hockey League, and debuted with Gwinnett last Thursday in Orlando.
Looney for Clune-y: Gwinnett also made a trade last week, sending Sacha Guimond to Ontario for Matt Clune. The defenseman, who is the younger brother of Nashville Predator forward Richard Clune, made an immediate impact, picking up two assists in his Gladiators debut Thursday in Orlando.
Lock it up: The Gladiators are 12-0 this season when leading after two periods.
Southern Comfort: Forward Dirk Southern played in his 350th game as a pro 1/20 vs. Wheeling, and now has nine assists in his last 11 games.
