Grizzlies hot streak continues
January 27, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release
The Utah Grizzlies have been the best team in the ECHL since Christmas, posting a 10-2-4 record since Dec. 26 pushing their record over the .500 mark overall at 17-16-7 for 41 points.
Utah went 2-0-1 last week, opening the week with a 4-3 overtime loss against Idaho on Monday. D.J. Jelitto scored a pair of goals for the Grizzlies while Michael Pelech and Vinny Scarsella each added two assists. Igor Bobkov made his first start for Utah since returning from Norfolk of the American Hockey League and saw his shutout streak end at 165:40, dating back to Nov. 30.
The Grizzlies returned to the win column on Friday with a 3-2 win over Bakersfield. Jamie MacQueen led the way with two goals and Aaron Dell picked up the win in goal with 26 saves.
Utah ended the week with a 2-1 shootout victory against the Condors on Saturday. Kris Hogg scored the only goal in regulation for the Grizzlies, and Utah went 3-for-4 in the shootout to pick up the win. Dell made 30 stops in regulation and overtime, then turned aside all three shots he faced in the shootout to record his fourth straight win.
It's been a balanced offensive effort this season for the Grizzlies as no player ranks in the top 33 in league scoring, but five players have tallied at least 20 points. David Vallorani leads the way for Utah with 29 points (15g-14a) in 38 games. MacQueen is second on the team in goals with 12 in just 20 games.
Dell, who has gone 6-1-1 in his last eight starts, has allowed two goals or less in 12 of his 16 appearances with Utah this season. He is tied for fourth in the league with a 2.10 goals-against average and is tied for sixth with a .921 save percentage.
The Grizzlies wrap up a five-game home stand on Wednesday against Las Vegas before visiting Bakersfield for a pair of games on Friday and Saturday to begin a seven-game road trip.
