Fort Wayne Komets News Release

Fort Wayne, IN | Monday, March 21, 2011 -- The Komets enter the final week of the 2010-11 regular-season slate in a battle for playoff position with Dayton and Quad City who continue to vie for sixth, seventh and eighth place finishes in the CHL Turner Conference. The opening round in the race for the Ray Miron Presidents' Cup begins next week and the Komets could face Colorado, Rapid City, Bloomington or Missouri yet with only six points separating first place from fourth place.

The Komets (29-26-7) start the week tied with Dayton (30-28-5) for seventh place with 65 points and have a game in hand. Quad City (33-29-1) holds a slim two-point lead with 67 points and has three games remaining to Fort Wayne's four.

FINAL FOUR The only thing certain is that the Komets will finish the regular season with a busy week of four games in five nights beginning with a trip to Bloomington Tuesday before hosting Dayton Wednesday at the Coliseum. The Komets will complete the week and regular season with a two-game home stand against the visiting Colorado Eagles Friday and Saturday.

Komets at Bloomington Tuesday, 8:05pm ET -- After dropping a 4-2 home affair Sunday at the Coliseum the Komets are looking to gain points for position in the playoffs. The Komets are coming off a 2-1-1 week while Bloomington, six points out of first place but only trailing second-place Rapid City by four points, was 1-2-0 last week and is hoping to build on their victory in Fort Wayne Sunday. The Komets are 3-5-0 against the PrairieThunder and 2-2-0 in four meetings at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

Komets host Dayton Wednesday, 7:30pm, ET -- The 14th and final meeting of the season will be an encounter for playoff position. It's the seventh and final visit by the Gems this season with the Komets leading the series 7-5-1, 4-2-0 on Coliseum ice. Dayton is coming off two straight losses over the weekend (2-4-1 in their last seven) and is idle before visiting Fort Wayne Wednesday. The Gems will finish the season hosting Quad City Friday and Saturday which almost assures that the Komets won't know their post-season opening round opponent until after all games are completed Saturday night.

Komets welcome Colorado Friday at 8pm ET and Saturday at 7:30pm ET -- The Komets will close the regular season schedule with home games against the Colorado Eagles Friday and Saturday. The Komets fell 6-1 at Colorado March 11 in the only previous meeting of the season. Colorado will bring a four-game winning streak to Fort Wayne Friday and are 5-1-0 in their last six games. The Eagles lead Rapid City by two points for first-place and home ice advantage at least throughout the Turner Conference playoffs. Both Colorado and Rapid City have two games remaining. Rapid City plays their two remaining games at Arizona Friday and Saturday.

End of Season Komet Awards Saturday -- The Komets will present their annual player End of Season Awards ceremony immediately following the game Saturday against Colorado. Awards for Community Service, True Komet, Defensive Forward, Mr. Hustle, Unsung Hero, Most Improved Player, Defenseman of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player will be presented.

ABOUT LAST WEEK The Komets gained five points in four games for the week. Wednesday the Komets broke a 4-4 tie with Guy Dupuis netting the game winner with 1:12 remaining for a 5-4 win over the visiting Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs in a fantastic finish. Friday the Komets earned a point in a 3-2 shootout loss to Bossier-Shreveport in the second of a double-header home stand against the Mudbugs. Saturday the Komets scored a 5-4 shootout victory at Evansville. After a 2-0-1 start to the week Fort Wayne dropped a 4-2 decision to the visiting Bloomington PrairieThunder Sunday and snapped a brief three-game unbeaten string.

Komet shootout star - Goaltender Kevin Reiter won both starts last week for a two-game win string. Reiter's home win Wednesday against Bossier-Shreveport was his fifth straight home win. Reiter remains unbeaten in shootouts with his second shootout win of the season at Evansville Saturday. Reiter has not lost a shootout in his Fort Wayne career after going 2-for-2 in his first year with the Komets in 2007-08.

Career marks - center Mathieu Curadeau dished his 100th career assist Sunday. His assist also gives him and three-game point streak (1g, 3a) heading into the final week of the regular season. Center Colin Chaulk posted a goal and three assists for four points for the week to give him 599 Fort Wayne career points in 496 games. Chaulk can reach 500 Fort Wayne career (regular season) games by appearing in all four remaining games this week.

Komet Ironman - Veteran Guy Dupuis is the only Komet ironman for 2010-11 appearing in all 62 games to date. If Dupuis appears in all four games remaining this week, the defenseman will extend his streak of not missing a regular season game in three straight seasons. Dupuis missed seven games in 2007-08 and missed one in 2005-06, his first season back with Fort Wayne since 1998-99. Just for the record, Dupuis has appeared in 943 Fort Wayne regular season games to date, 1,030 Fort Wayne career games, counting playoffs.
