Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
THE SKINNY: The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (24-33-6) are set for the final week of regular season play with three games at the State Farm Arena. The Bees open the week against the Odessa Jackalopes on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The Bees then host the Missouri Mavericks and Texas Brahmas this weekend to close the regular season.
The Bees are coming off a tough week falling in three straight games including a pair to Odessa. Most recently the Bees dropped Saturday night's game to the Allen Americans by a 3-1 score. Darcy Campbell potted the Bees lone goal in the second period to tie the game at one but Allen would score a pair of goals in a 43 second time frame to take the victory. Juliano Pagliero made 28 saves in net for the Bees.
The Bees sit in eighth place in the Berry Conference, the final playoff spot with three games remaining. The Bees hold a two point lead over the Laredo Bucks with a 'magic number' of four since the Bees hold the tiebreaker over the Bucks. The Bees can still catch the Arizona Sundogs for the seventh seed as the Bees are five points back.
BEES NEED TO KNOW:
. Darcy Campbell was named to the 2011 All-CHL team on Monday and with the honor becomes the first Killer Bees player to ever be named to the All-CHL team. Campbell leads all defensemen in the league in points.
. Killer Bees forward Aaron Lewicki was honored being named to the 2011 CHL All-Rookie squad last week. Lewicki leads all rookies in goals, assists, and points and sits second on the Bees in goals scored and third in total points.
. As the finalists for the CHL's top individual awards were announced the Bees found themselves with a trio of candidates. Darcy Campbell is a finalist for top defensemen, Aaron Lewicki is a finalist for top rookie and Zak McClellan is a finalist for the CHL Man of the Year Award.
. The Bees captured the first-ever Cricket Mayor's Cup over rival Laredo with their 3-2 victory on Feb. 26. For the season the Bees finished with a 9-5-2 record against the Bucks, winning the cup with a 20-17 edge.
. Zak McClellan, who was named captain at the start of the season, now owns the Killer Bees all-time record for shorthanded goals with nine scoring two this season scoring most recently Feb. 11 in Wichita while the Bees were killing off a 5-on-3.
