Fort Wayne Komets News Release
The Komets completed the holiday week last week earning seven of eight points (3-0-1) and extended their unbeaten streak to six games (4-0-2). The K's improved to 9-15-3 after 27 games of the 2010-11 campaign. The Komets have skated the fewest number of games of any team in the CHL and have five games in hand over Evansville, their closest rival in the Turner Conference, who are four points ahead of the K's.
The Komets also extended their home unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1) and have earned points in each of their last two road games (1-01) after a five game road losing skid.
About last week -- The Komets started the last week of 2010 with a rare Monday night home game doubling up Dayton 4-2. Wednesday the holiday week continued with a 7-5 home win over Mississippi for the K's third straight win on Coliseum ice. Friday the Komets dropped their first New Year's Eve home game in nine years, a 6-5 overtime setback to Quad City, snapping an eight-game winning streak on New Year's Eve in Fort Wayne. Saturday the Komets completed the week with a 4-3 shootout win at Dayton in the first Komet game on New Year's day in 17 years. It was the first Fort Wayne win at Dayton this year after four trips and snapped a Fort Wayne six-game road winless streak.
The week ahead -- Friday, Jan. 7, Evansville IceMen (10-17-5) at Fort Wayne Komets (9-15-3), 8:00pm ET
The Komets will skate their first home game of the new year against the IceMen at 8pm. Evansville enters the week winless in the last five games (0-3-2) and are coming off three straight losses over the past weekend. It will be the fourth of 11 meetings this year. The Komets lead the series 2-1-0 after a 4-2 win at Evansville the last meeting Nov. 26. It's the second of seven visits by Evansville. The Komets chipped the IceMen 4-3 in the first meeting at Fort Wayne Nov. 6. Evansville skates at Bloomington Wednesday before traveling to Fort Wayne Friday.
Saturday, Jan. 8, Fort Wayne Komets at Dayton Gems (16-12-2), 7:30pm ET
The Fort Wayne-Dayton rivalry continues Saturday night at 7:30 at Hara Arena at Dayton. The Komets upended the Gems 4-3 in a shootout last Saturday at Dayton and trail the season series 3-4-1 after nine meetings. The Gems are 5-3-1 in their last nine outings, 2-2-1 in their last five, and they enter week 13 trailing Terry Conference leader Rapid City by four points and have two games in hand. Dayton busses to Bloomington Friday before welcoming the Komets Saturday.
Sunday, Jan. 9, Quad City Mallards (17-14-0) at Fort Wayne Komets, 5pm ET
The Mallards started a three-game win string with their 6-5 overtime win at Fort Wayne New Year's Eve. The Komets trail the season series 2-3-1 and are 2-0-1 on Fort Wayne ice against Quad City. Quad City enters the week tied with Dayton in the Terry Conference for fifth place with 34 points. The Mallards host Tulsa Friday and skate at Evansville Saturday before arriving in Fort Wayne Sunday.
Streaking Komets -- In addition to the Komets' six-game point streak (4-0-2), Mathieu Curadeau has a three-game assist and point streak (2g, 3a), Brandon Warner has a three-game assist and point streak (2g, 4a) and Tab Lardner has a four-game goal and point streak (5g, 1a).
Milestones -- Friday night, New Year's Eve, defenseman Guy Dupuis dished his 400th Fort Wayne career ( regular season) assist in his 907th Fort Wayne career game. Center Mathieu Curadeau scored his 100th career goal.
Welcome back 91 -- The Komets expect to welcome back to the lineup center Colin Chaulk this week when the IceMen visit Friday at 8pm. Chaulk started the season playing for Alleghe in the Italiain elite league before deciding to return to Fort Wayne. The veteran center agreed to a Fort Wayne deal for the remainder of this season and next. Chaulk led the Komets last season with 58 assists and 85 points and topped the IHL with a plus-34 while netting a career high 27 goals. Over a span of eight seasons with Fort Wayne he has scored 150 goals, 411 assists, 561 points and 811 penalty minutes in 461 games and ranks sixth on Fort Wayne's all-time top 10 point leaders list.
CHL All-Star break next week -- The CHL will celebrate their All-Star Game at Rapid City Wednesday, Jan. 12. Representing the Komets at the gala affair will be defenseman Frankie DeAngelis. DeAngelis leads the Komets with 16 assists and 23 points after 27 games.
