Komets' Puhalski named Coach of the Year

Fort Wayne, IN --- The UHL announced today that Fort Wayne Komet's head coach Greg Puhalski has been named the league's Coach of the Year for 2002-03. The UHL Coach of the Year is determined by a vote of UHL head coaches and general managers.

Puhalski, 38, finished his 5th UHL regular season as head coach, and 3rd with Fort Wayne (123-71-30, .616), guiding the Komets to their first Tarry Cup with a 44-21-11 record for 99 points and his first regular season championship as a head coach. He has coached 9 consecutive winning seasons including the last 3 in Fort Wayne.

Puhalski accepted the position as Fort Wayne Komets head coach July 12, 2000, after spending 2 seasons at the helm of the UHL's Port Huron Border Cats from 1998-2000. The Komet's bench boss posted a division title his first season in Fort Wayne taking the 2000-01 UHL Northwest Division Championship.

Puhalski also coached 4 seasons in Toledo of the ECHL from 1994-1998 posting a .638 winning percentage and capturing the 1995-96 North Division title (48-14-8, 104 pts). As a player, the former center won 2 consecutive ECHL Riley Cup championships with Toledo and led the team in scoring during the 1993-94 season (49 games, 22 goals, 90 points).

Puhalski is a native of Thunder Bay, Ontario, and was selected by the Boston Bruins in the 3rd round of the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. He was a standout player at Wilfred-Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, and earned a masters degree in Athletic Administration from Ohio University.
