Kolb's Four-Hit Night Leads 'Cats to Fifth Straight Win

LINCOLN, Neb. - Brian Kolb was 4-for-5 with three RBI to propel the RailCats to a 10-4 win over the Lincoln Saltdogs in the series opener on Friday night. The RailCats (38-41) have won five games in a row and eight out of their last ten.

The RailCats struck in the first inning off of Saltdogs starter Tommy Palica. Adam Klein walked and Mike Massaro singled. Ryan Babineau then walked with one out to load the bases for Kolb, who delivered a two-run single. Zac Mitchell hit a two-out, two-run single to make it 4-0. The RailCats are outscoring their opponents 72-36 in the first inning this season, their most productive inning by far.

The 'Cats were back at it in the third inning, scoring a run on a fielding error by Saltdogs third baseman Bryan Pounds. David Cooper then drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Klein brought home Cooper with a double to give the 'Cats a 7-0 advantage.

Lincoln stranded two runners in each of the first three innings before breaking through against RailCats starter Alberto Rolon in the fourth. One run scored on a wild pitch and another on a Rolon throwing error. Former RailCat Matt Forgatch hit a two-run shot to left off of Rolon in the fifth to cut the RailCats lead to 7-4.

Rolon (3-4) gave up four runs, three earned in five inningsfor his first win as a RailCat. Nolan Nicholson and Marshall Schuler each threw two scoreless innings of relief.

The RailCats capped the scoring in the sixth inning, as Kolb hit an RBI single for his fourth hit and Chris Carrara came home to score on an error on the same play. Chase Tucker then hit a run-scoring single to right for his first career hit and RBI, extending the lead to 10-4.

Game two of the three-game set is on Saturday night at 7:05. Southpaw Jon Gulbransen (3-1, 2.92) will be on the bump for Gary.
