Lowey Too Much for Goldeyes
August 10, 2012 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Josh Lowey is the ace of the Wichita Wingnuts staff. Last night he out-dueled the Ace of the Winnipeg Goldeyes staff.
Lowey, who came into the game with a record of 12-3 and an earned run average of just 2.94, held the Goldeyes to only three runs on two hits over seven complete innings as the Wingnuts evened the series in Winnipeg at a win apiece with an 8-3 win.
A crowd of 6,096 watched a wild one at Shaw Park as Goldeyes manager Rick Forney was ejected in the sixth inning for arguing with first base umpire Steve Linton.
Meanwhile, the Wingnuts tagged Goldeyes starter Ace Walker for seven runs on nine hits and relievers Alex Jones and Griffin Bailey for a run on six hits. The 15-hit attack, combined with three Goldeyes errors, was enough to put a halt to Winnipeg's four-game winning streak.
With the loss, Winnipeg fell to 46-32 on the season and dropped five games behind Fargo in the race for first in the American Association's North Division.
Wichita scored a run in the first, four in the fourth and three more in the sixth and that was plenty. The Wingnuts No. 8 hitter, third baseman Steve Carillo, did the most damage going two-for-four with a run scored and three RBI.
Winnipeg, meanwhile, scratched out a run in the third without a hit as Josh Mazzola walked, Kyle Day walked, Amos Ramon laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners up 90 feet and then Price Kendall drove home Mazzola with a sacrifice fly.
The Goldeyes scored two more in the fourth to make the score 5-3 as Yurendell de Caster was hit by a pitch, Jon Weber walked, Luis Alen doubled home de Caster and Weber scored on a ground out by Mazzola.
But that was it. Despite a leadoff double by Amos Ramon in the eighth, Lowey was just too good on this night.
Lowey (13-3, 3.00 ERA) got the win for Wichita while Walker (6-4, 3.60 ERA) suffered the loss for the Goldeyes. Walker lasted 5.1 innings, giving up six earned runs.
Saturday night the Goldeyes will play the final game of this three-game series with the Wingnuts. Lefty Chris Salamida (3-5, 4.48 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg while Anthony Capra (1-1, 5.28 ERA) will counter for the Wingnuts.
Game time is 6 p.m. at Shaw Park and it can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play.
