Aint No Offense for St. Paul in 2-0 Loss to Sox

ST. PAUL, MN - An unbelievable pitching matchup broke out at Midway Stadium on Friday night, but the St. Paul Saints produced nothing against Amarillo Sox starter Justin Garcia in a 2-0 defeat in front of 6,157.

Saints starter Robert Coe, who had not lost at home all season, faced off against Justin Garcia, who just three starts ago tossed a complete game three-hit shutout. Through the first four innings neither team got on the scoreboard, the first time since June 5 that the Saints were a part of a game where nobody scored in the first four innings.

The Sox had the best opportunity to get on the board in the second when Chuck Lofgren doubled and moved to third on a single by Tyler Goodro. Harrison Kain hit a fly ball to right that Miles Durham caught and Lofgren tagged from third to score. The only problem, however, is Lofgren left to early and was called out on an appeal at third.

In the fifth the Sox got on the board when Goodro hit a solo homer to left, his first of the season, to give the Sox a 1-0 lead.

In the sixth the Sox scored the only other run of the game when Tim Alberts led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Patrick Arlis and scored on a two-out single by Lofgren. Coe went 7.0 innings allowing two runs on eight hits while striking out seven, but lost for the first time since June 26.

On the other side Garcia was dominant as the Saints managed just one runner to third and that occurred in the first. Adam Frost singled with one out and stole second and third, but was left stranded.

The Saints didn't manage another hit until the fifth when Benji Johnson and Jim Rapoport each singled with two outs, but Frost struck out to end the inning. Garcia threw 142 pitches, 87 for strikes, in going 7.2 innings allowing four hits while walking one and striking out a season high nine.

The same two teams meet Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. in game two of the three game series. The Saints send LHP Kyle Hurst (0-1, 4.50) to the mound against Sox LHP Cliff Springston (0-3, 8.38). It is Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame induction night presented by Killebrew Root Beer as the Saints induct Detroit Tiger Al Avila.
