Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies News Release
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies goaltender Trevor Koenig became the first player in club history and the eighth player in ECHL history to score a goal when he scaled the puck into the Wheeling empty-net with 49 seconds remaining in regulation to seal a 4-1 victory over the Wheeling Nailers last night at WesBanco Arena.
Koenig is the third ECHL goaltender in the last three seasons to accomplish the feat. The last ECHL goaltender credited with a goal was Brian Eklund of Pensacola on December 5, 2003 at Mississippi. Eklund's goal was scored in the first period after the puck got by a Mississippi defenseman and rolled the length of the ice into the goal which was empty as the result of an upcoming penalty call. Eklund was the last player to touch the puck for Pensacola, so he was credited with the unassisted goal.
Corwin Saurdiff of Hampton Roads became the first ECHL goaltender to score a goal, accomplishing the feat during the 1994-95 season, and Charlotte's Nick Vitucci, Erie's Olie Sundstrom and South Carolina's Sean Gauthier all accomplished the feat during the 1995-96 season. Toledo's Mark Bernard scored a goal on March 27, 2001 against Johnstown. Mike Smith of Lexington scored on October 22, 2002 against Dayton.
Koenig, 27, is 8-3-1 with the Bullies since his acquisition from San Diego along with forward Colin Shields on February 4. He has started 11 out of the last 12 games for Atlantic City and has posted a 2.46 goals against average and a .921% save percentage. The seven-year veteran from Edmonton, Alberta is 18-9-3 for the season with a 2.65 goals against average and a .911% save percentage.
Atlantic City returns to Historic Boardwalk Hall for a pair of weekend games beginning at 7:05PM on Friday as they host the East Division Leading Charlotte Checkers. The first 2,500 fans through the gates will receive the fifth set of Bullies Collectible Trading Cards presented by Copiers Plus.
