Bullies' Koenig Is Eighth ECHL Goaltender To Score Goal
March 3, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release
PRINCETON, N.J. - For the third season in a row an ECHL goaltender has scored a goal as Atlantic City's Trevor Koenig became the eighth goaltender in league history to score a goal. Koenig was attempting to clear the puck from the Atlantic City zone when he lofted it out to center ice and it carried into the Nailers net to give the Bullies a 4-1 lead with 41 seconds left in the game.
Acquired in a three-team trade with San Diego and Dayton in February, Koenig is 8-3-1 with a goals-against average of 2.46 and a save percentage of .921 in 12 games with Atlantic City. Koenig was 10-6-2 with a goals-against average of 2.79 and a save percentage of .904 in 18 starts with San Diego.
The last ECHL goaltender credited with a goal was Brian Eklund of Pensacola on December 5, 2003 at Mississippi. Eklund's goal was scored in the first period after the puck got by a Mississippi defenseman and rolled the length of the ice into the goal which was empty as the result of an upcoming penalty call. Eklund was the last player to touch the puck for Pensacola, so he was credited with the unassisted goal.
Corwin Saurdiff of Hampton Roads became the first ECHL goaltender to score a goal, accomplishing the feat during the 1994-95 season, and Charlotte's Nick Vitucci, Erie's Olie Sundstrom and South Carolina's Sean Gauthier all accomplished the feat during the 1995-96 season. Toledo's Mark Bernard scored a goal on March 27, 2001 against Johnstown. Mike Smith of Lexington scored on October 22, 2002 against Dayton. Smith gained control of the puck and flipped it out of zone. The puck hit in the center face-off circle and slid untouched into the empty net. Smith's goal was featured on "NHL 2Night" on ESPN.
