Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

Troy, NY- The Tri-City ValleyCats announced today that Koby Clemens, son of Astros pitching ace Roger Clemens, will report tomorrow to finish the NYPL season, after starting his professional career in Greeneville of the Appalachian League. The 18 year old, 5'11' 200lb third baseman makes the move after batting .306 with 4 HR and a .491 slugging percentage in 32 games.

"Naturally we're excited to have him" said ValleyCats Manager Gregg Langbehn. "It's a great opportunity for him to play at a higher level and it's a great opportunity for guys on this team to play with him. He's a good player with a good arm and he plays hard. Those are all great qualities to have."

Clemens was a pitcher in high school but has played primarily at third base in Greenville. He turned down a scholarship to attend the University of Texas, his fathers' Alma Mater. Koby was a surprise pick in the 8th round of this year's amateur draft the 254th overall pick. The decision to turn professional, which he called the hardest decision of his life, was made after consulting with his parents who ultimately left the decision up to him.

While Clemens joins the ValleyCats, Wladimir Sutil, German Melendez and Luke Barganier are being rewarded for their efforts as well, with a promotion to Lexington of the South Atlantic League. The NYPL All-Star, Sutil's season is highlighted by hitting an impressive .329/.395/.385 (AVG/OBP/SLG) and playing superb defense for Tri-City. Melendez finishes the year at Tri-City with a 7-0 record in his first season on the mound after converting from catcher. Melendez bears an impressive 2.86 ERA in 28 and 1/3 relief innings with the ValleyCats. Outfielder Barganier will rejoin Lexington, where he played earlier in the year, following a brief 37 at-bat stint with Tri-City.
