LOWELL, MA --- Jay Johnson went 4-for-4 and Jed Lowrie 3-for-5 with two RBI as the Vermont Expos lost their sixth straight game with a 6-4 loss to the Lowell Spinners in New York-Penn League action Tuesday night at LeLacheur Park.

Lowell jumped out to a 4-0 with two runs in both the first and second innings off Expos starter John Lannan. A throwing error by shortstop Jose Contreras, his 25th of the season, in the first inning led to both Spinner runs being unearned as Lowrie and Luis Soto both had RBI singles.

The Spinners got another unearned run in the two-run second for the 4-0 lead before the Expos got a run back in the top of the third on three straight singles and an RBI groundout from Carlos Torres. Lowell got that run back in the bottom of the inning as Johnson tripled to score Jason Twomley, who had led off the third with a double.

Vermont closed the gap in the fifth inning as they scored two runs on four hits over reliever Keith Foulke, the Boston Red Sox closer on a rehab assignment at Lowell. Contreras led off the fifth with a single and scored on a Francisco Plasencia RBI double. After a Leonard Davis strikeout, Torres singled home Plasencia and Rolando Arnedo followed with a single. But with the tying runs on base with one out, Foulke settled down to strikeout Mike Daniel looking and Lorvin Louisa swinging.

Three straight one-out singles off reliever Clint Everts, including an RBI single from Lowrie, gave the Spinners a 6-3 lead, but the Expos cut the lead down to two in the eighth as Louisa hit a one-out solo home run to right field. It was Louisa's third homer of the season and Vermont's first home run in the last 14 games (Expos previous home run was on August 14th).

Expos tried to rally later in the eighth with runners on first and second with two outs, but Plasencia struckout to end the inning. Davis led off the ninth with a single, but Blake Maxwell came on for Lowell to retire the next three batters for his seventh save of the year.

Lowell starter JT Zink allowed one run on four hits over four innings, while Tim Cox (1-0) allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts in three relief innings for the win. Lannan (2-5) was touched for five runs (two earned) on seven hits over four innings to take the loss.

Contreras, Plasencia, Davis and Arnedo each had two hits for Vermont (21-46), while Contreras scored two runs and Torres had two RBI. The Expos are now 0-5 to start the nine-game roadtrip and have lost 10 straight road games overall (last road win at Batavia on August 10th).

Vermont will try and snap the road losing streak at Lowell on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard on the Zone, 960 AM and 96.7 FM.
