Abbotsford Heat News Release
The Peoria Rivermen continued their mastery of the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights, winning 2-1 on Friday night at Carver Arena. Dating back to last year, the Rivermen have won nine consecutive meetings with the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights.
The first period was scoreless even though the Knights enjoyed a five minute powerplay when Ryan Ramsay clipped Adam Pardy with a high stick. Peoria had two powerplays in the stanza.
The Rivermen earned the first lead of the game nearly halfway through the period. The Knights couldn't control the puck behind their net. Ryan Ramsay made the steal and fed DJ King who beat Curtis McElhinney with a wraparound shot for his second goal of the year.
The Knights enjoyed three powerplays in the second and finally cashed in on the third. Andrei Taratukhin found Pardy sliding in from the far point, and Pardy wired a shot past goalie Chris Beckford-Tseu for his first American Hockey League goal.
The Knights beat a path to the penalty box in the third period and on their final kill of the period, the Rivermen would finally break through. Jon DiSalvatore broke down the right wing, curled the net and stuffed the puck back in front where Trent Whitfield jammed it past McElhinney.
McElhinney made 27 saves but took the loss. The Knights have now lost two in a row on the road for the first time this year.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights are now 12-6-1-0.
Three Stars: 1. Chris Beckford-Tseu (PEO) - 29 saves; 2. Richie Regehr (OMA); 3. Trent Whitfield (PEO) - Game-winning goal.
The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights finish off the home-and-home series with the Rivermen on Saturday night at the Civic Auditorium. Game time is 7:00 p.m. Fans are encouraged to bring a canned food item to the game to help Operation Others, a group of local high school students collecting food for the less fortunate. Those fans who do bring a canned food item will receive a free ticket voucher to any of the Knights' upcoming Wednesday home games.
Tickets for all Ak-Sar-Ben Knights' games are on sale at the Omaha Civic Auditorium box office Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tickets also are available through all Ticketmaster outlets and by phone at (402) 422-1212. Kids 12 and under get in free with a paid adult on tickets purchased after 5:00 p.m. Other restrictions apply.
