Iowa Chops News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Iowa Stars Director of Hockey Operations Scott White announced this afternoon that the Dallas Stars have assigned Left Wing Mathias Tjarnqvist to the Des Moines-based Iowa Stars for conditioning. The Dallas Stars have also reassigned Left Wing Francis Wathier from the Iowa Stars to the Idaho Steelheads (ECHL). The Iowa Stars also made a move of their own, loaning Defenseman Jared Nightingale to the team's ECHL affiliate in Idaho.
Tjarnqvist, 27, has skated in one game for Dallas this season, notching two penalty minutes in 10:25 minutes of ice time on Nov. 22 vs. Nashville. In 52 career NHL games, the 6-2, 196-pound winger has recorded three goals and five assists for eight points with 20 penalty minutes: 52(3/5/8)20.
The native of Umea, Sweden, skated in 33 games for Dallas last season and posted six points (two goals and four assists) and 18 penalty minutes. In 34 games for Iowa a season ago, Tjarnqvist netted 17 goals and added 12 assists for 29 points, ranking fifth on the club in goals and sixth in power-play goals (5).
A native of Cheboygan, Michigan, Nightingale had appeared in nine games for Iowa this season, recording two goals, two penalty minutes and a 'plus 4' rating: 9(2/0/2)+4. At the time of his recall on October 26th, he had skated in three games for the Steelheads, recording four penalty minutes: 3(0/0/0)4. The 6-2, 200-pound defenseman made his professional debut with the Springfield (MA) Falcons in late March of last season, where he registered his first professional goal on April 8th, 2006 against Providence. A right-handed shooter, he skated in 156 career games in four seasons at Michigan State University, accumulating 161 penalty minutes and 23 points: 156(2/21/23)161. Born on October 3rd, 1982, he was an Assistant Captain with the MSU Spartans during his senior season.
Drafted by the Dallas Stars with their eighth choice in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, Wathier made his 2006-07 debut with the Iowa Stars on November 22nd in Syracuse, New York. He recorded no points and one shot in the game. Prior to his initial assignment to Iowa, he played in 11 games for the Stars ECHL affiliate, the Idaho Steelheads. While in Idaho, the St-Isidore, Ontario native averaged a point-per-game: 11(3/8/11). He also had a 'plus 4' rating and 23 penalty minutes in those games. The 21-year-old played in just 11 games for Iowa last season, before having season ending surgery. He was originally reassigned by Dallas to Idaho on October 12th. The 6-3, 205 left winger was named the Iowa Stars American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year last season.
