Charlotte Knights News Release

>(DURHAM, NC) - The Charlotte Knights dropped the opening game of their six-game series against the Durham Bulls from Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Tuesday by a score of 8-5. The loss stopped Charlotte's winning streak at three consecutive games.

The Knights scored first on Tuesday and did so in the top of the fourth inning thanks to an RBI single from shortstop Matt Reynolds. The lead didn't last long, however, as the Bulls battled back in the bottom of the fourth inning and took a lead they would not relinquish.

LHP Matt Tomshaw (0-3, 7.16) started for the Knights and did not allow a run over the first three innings of the game, but ran into trouble in the fourth inning. The 32-year-old left-hander allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits over 3.1 innings pitched. All seven runs came in the bottom of the fourth inning. He was saddled with the loss.

The Knights battled back late in the game against the Bulls and received help from first baseman Tim Beckham, who launched his third home run of the season in the seventh inning. The Knights continued to push across runs and pulled to within just three runs down thanks to a solo home run from catcher Nate Nolan and two RBIs from designated hitter Blake Rutherford over the final three innings.

Despite the late-inning efforts, the Knights fell just short in Tuesday's opener against the Bulls.

Chicago White Sox LHP Jace Fry was sharp over two scoreless innings in relief on his major league rehab assignment. Fry has not allowed a run over seven innings this season with the Knights. He is currently on Chicago's 60-day injured list.

The two teams will continue their series from Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and www.CharlotteKnights.com.
