Charlotte Knights News Release

(Rochester, NY) - Charlie Leesman entered Friday's game against the Rochester Red Wings with the lowest ERA in the International League. While he lowered that mark to 2.16, the Knights fell short in their quest for a win on Friday.

Tsuyoshi Nishioka had three hits, starter Samuel Deduno (1-1, 2.43) allowed one hit over six scoreless innings, and Rochester slipped past the Charlotte Knights 3-0 on Friday in the opening game of a four-game series from Frontier Field in Rochester, NY. The Knights had just three hits in the contest.

Charlotte (43-33) brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the ninth inning. With one out in the frame, Dan Johnson doubled. Conor Jackson, who hit three home runs on Thursday, then drew a walk and the tying run was now at the plate. A comeback for the second straight day, however, was not in the cards.

Dallas McPherson struck out and reliever Casey Fien then came on to get Josh Phegy to ground out to end the game. Fien earned his ninth save of the season.

Leesman (7-5, 2.16) allowed just one run on seven hits over 5.2 innings and was saddled with the loss. The Ohio native tied a season-high with nine strikeouts.

Despite the loss, the Knights held their ground in the IL South Division. Second place Gwinnett lost their seventh consecutive game. The Knights remain six games ahead of the G-Braves.

Earlier in the day, Charlotte reliever Brian Bruney had his contract purchased by the Chicago White Sox. Bruney became the fifth pitcher this season to go from Charlotte to Chicago.

On Saturday, the two teams will be back on the diamond for game two of their four-game series. RHP Simon Castro will make his Charlotte Knights debut. The Red Wings will send RHP Steve Hirschfield to the hill. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
