Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Indianapolis, IN - Indianapolis shortstop Chase d'Arnaud only had one of the Indians nine hits in the series opening game against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday night but the one hit he picked up was the biggest one of the game. d'Arnaud's two out, two RBI single to right field broke a 2-2 tie and lifted Indianapolis to a 4-2 win. The Indians picked up their sixth consecutive win, while the Yankees matched a season high with their fifth consecutive loss.
Indianapolis left hander Justin Wilson and Yankees right hander Ramon Ortiz battled through the first five innings of the series opener on Friday night with neither pitcher giving an inch, in the case of Wilson that meant not allowing a base hit. The Indians lefty was perfect through five innings and while Ortiz who allowed three hits and two walks kept the Indians off the scoreboard as well.
The Yankees scored the first run of the night finally breaking through against Wilson in the top of the sixth inning. Kevin Russo and Corban Joseph drew back-to-back two out walks. Ronnier Mustelier's RBI single to center field scored Russo and gave the Yankees the 1-0 lead.
Indianapolis tied the game in the bottom half of the sixth inning off Ortiz who like the Indians starter Wilson, allowed just one run. A leadoff walk to Starling Marte and a base hit by Jeff Clement put runners at first and second with none out for Jeff Larrish who advanced the pair with a ground out to first. With one down Brandon Boggs fly ball to center was deep enough to score Marte from third and the game was tied at 1-1.
Wilson was lifted following the sixth inning and earned no decision for Indianapolis. The southpaw pitched six innings allowing one run on just one hit with three walks and eight strikeouts.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre retook the lead with a single run in the top half of the eighth inning off Indians reliever Daniel Moskos (WP, 1-2) on Russo's RBI single that scored Chris Dickerson from second base. Dickerson led off the inning with a bunt single on the right side of the infield and stole second base to move into scoring position with one out. Russo's RBI single to right field gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead and put Ortiz in line for his seventh win of the season. Justin Thomas (LP, 1-1) started the eighth inning for the Yankees replacing Ortiz who went seven innings allowing one run on five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts. The right hander threw a season high 107 pitches.
Thomas walked Clement to open the eighth inning and following a strike out of pinch hitter Yamaico Navarro gave up a one out single to Brandon Boggs to put runners on the corners. Anderson Hernandez then struck out for the second out of the inning before Tony Sanchez delivered a single to center scoring pinch runner Eric Fryer to tie the score at 2-2. After an infield single by Brian Friday loaded the bases, d'Arnaud came through with his game winning hit to right field.
Tim Wood (SV, 9) closed the door in the ninth inning to preserve the win for the Indians who improve to 45-29 on the season. The Yankees have lost five straight matching their longest losing streak of the season set from May 3-8 and drop to 40-35.
The two teams continue the four game series on Saturday night with a 7:05 PM first pitch from Victory Field in Indianapolis. Right hander John Maine (1-1, 3.18) gets the start for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre while Indianapolis counters with right hander Rick VandenHurk (5-0, 1.86).
