Charlotte Knights News Release
(NORFOLK, VA) - The Charlotte Knights dropped the finale of their three-game series to the Norfolk Tides by a score of 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park.
After being shut out on Saturday, the Knights struck first on Sunday. With two outs and two runners on base, YermÃn Mercedes lined a double down the left field line, scoring Alcides Escobar with the game's first run.
However, that would be all the Knights could produce on the afternoon. Norfolk starter Keegan Akin (W, 4-2) earned the win after giving up just the one run with five walks and six strikeouts over 5.0 innings.
In the third, the Tides got their starter in the lead on back-to-back solo homers from Austin Wynns and Ryan Mountcastle against Charlotte starter Héctor Santiago (L, 3-2).
An RBI single from Jesus Sucre in the fourth and a delayed steal of home from Cedric Mullins in the fifth increased the Norfolk lead to 4-1. That would be the end of Santiago's start. In his second outing with the Knights this season, the veteran southpaw gave up four earned runs on eight hits with one walk and five outs to get saddled with the loss.
In relief for the Knights, Colton Turner gave up two earned runs in 2.0 innings with one strikeouts as the Tides extended their lead to 6-1, the eventual final score. Connor Walsh pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth for Charlotte.
Offensively, the Knights were held to four hits in the loss, with Mercedes' double the only extra-base hit. Danny Mendick, Jacob Scavuzzo, and Escobar provided the other three hits for the Knights in their second straight defeat.
The Knights continue their road trip with a three-game series against the Durham Bulls starting on Monday night. Pre-game radio coverage of the 7:05 p.m. game is set for 6:50 p.m. on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad will have the call for all of the action.
