Buffalo Bisons News Release
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end.
Trailing 5-0 after the first inning, the Buffalo Bisons clawed their way back with their own three-run scoring surge in the fifth but came up short as the Syracuse Mets came out on top with a 10-4 victory at Sahlen Field on Sunday afternoon.
Winners of eight straight at home heading into the matinee, Buffalo dealt with a Mets team that had some urgency in their at-bats and finished with 16 hits, their most hits in a game this series. The Mets took a cue from recent experience, too, as - similar to Buffalo's early success in last night's 9-3 win - their damage was done in a series of at-bats against starter Conor Fisk in the first inning.
The Mets started their attack with a two-out two-run double from Danny Espinosa (3 RBI total) to left-centerfield, allowing Luis Guillorme and Ruben Tejada to score. Four pitches later, Rene Rivera blasted a two-run home-run over the left-centerfield wall. Travis Taijeron provided a solo home of his own in the first as well for the 5-0 lead.
The pressured continued in the second inning when Guillorme connected on a fastball for a solo home run, followed by Rivera's solo home run in the third inning towards the thruway for Syracuse's 7-0 lead. The designated hitter smacked another home run in the ninth inning to right-field off Jordan Romano to cap off a three home-run, four-RBI day.
His third start of the season, Fisk finished strong for the Herd, striking out two of his final three batters in his third and final inning before being replaced by Zach Jackson. He finished the day striking out four batters yet allowed seven runs on nine hits - including four of Syracuse's five home runs.
After only two hits through the first three innings - a single and a double from Bo Bichette - the Buffalo offense found their groove for a brief stretch. Michael De La Cruz's RBI single in the fourth off Walker Lockett brought home Jordan Patterson to trim Syracuse's lead to 7-1.
Then, following a 1-2-3, 9-pitch inning thrown by Jackson in the top of the fifth, Buffalo was on the move, scoring their final three runs on four hits. Back-to-back singles from Roemon Fields and Bichette (his third hit of the day) provided baserunners for the Herd. After Fields scored on Socrates Brito's sacrifice groundout, Billy McKinney rejoined the team in style.
His first appearance with the Herd since June 15 after being promoted to Toronto, the left-fielder hit a two-run home-run over the right-field wall to cut the deficit to 7-4.
Following this surge, the Bisons had only one hit and a total of two men on base onward.
Guillorme and Espinosa rounded out the scoring with sacrifice pop-outs in the sixth and eighth inning respectively. Lockett recorded his first win at Triple-A with Syracuse with his five inning, four strikeout outing.
BISONS NOTES: With his three-hit outing, Bichette now has nine multi-hit games this season. His season-best four hits came on 6/23 against Norfolk... For the Buffalo bullpen, Jackson has now made nine straight appearances without allowing a run dating back to his appearance against SWB on June 5, allowing just six hits over that stretch... With his single in the fifth, Patterson is now on a six-game hitting streak and is 7 of 22 (.318) over that stretch... The Bisons ended the month with a 20-10 record. This was the first time the team won 20 or more in a month since May 2005 when they finished 23-7. It was the 11th time the team won 20+ games in a month since the start of the Modern Era in 1985.... Since 6/6 vs SWB, the Herd have won 18 of their last 24 games... Buffalo continues their homestand tomorrow for a three-game series against Lehigh Valley. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
