Carpenter Throws Career-Best 11 Strikeouts

TOLEDO, Ohio - Ryan Carpenter (3-5, 5.00 ERA) pitched six scoreless innings with 11 strikeouts Sunday against the Durham Bulls, leading the Toledo Mud Hens to a 9-3 win at Fifth Third Field.

Carpenter, who made his 10th Triple-A start this season, was one strikeout shy of tying the team-high set by Tyler Alexander on June 22.

The former 2011 Tampa Bay Rays seventh-round draft pick had only pitched a shutout outing once in 2019 with Toledo prior to Sunday.

Finishing at double-digit hits (13) for the 37th game, the Mud Hens have won 10 of their last 13 games at home and five of their last six series, improving to 10-6 against International League North Division clubs.

Durham starter Arturo Reyes (6-3, 3.52 ERA) took the loss on five innings of work and five earned runs allowed.

Toledo is now two-games back of .500 (20-22) at home.

By the start of the sixth inning, the Mud Hens boasted a five-run lead off two doubles, a sacrifice fly and solo home run.

Willi Castro broke the scoreless stretch in the fourth inning as his fly ball to left field dropped near the corner for Jordy Mercer to reach home safely.

Castro, the No. 7 ranked Detroit Tigers prospect, jumped to second among Toledo batters in total RBIs (35) this season behind Victor Reyes (55).

Durham had a no-hitter continue through the fourth until Reyes smacked a ground ball into center field to set up runners at the corners.

The Mud Hens led 2-0 after Mikie Mahtook's fly ball to center scored Reyes, who was recently promoted to Detroit on Friday, and has since gone 5-for-9 with two doubles and two RBIs.

Daniel Pinero led off the fifth inning and registered his fourth home run of the season.

The native of Toronto, Ontario, made his fourth start with Toledo at first base Sunday. Pinero has played all four infield positions since being assigned from Double-A Erie on May 29.

Arturo's outing would end after Dawel Lugo and Reyes knocked-in back-to-back RBI doubles.

Lugo returned to the Mud Hens from Detroit on Wednesday where the 24-year-old made 82 at-bats in 28 games. He's now enjoying a 12-for-22 batting line with four doubles, two home runs and eight RBIs in the last five games.

Toledo reliever Jose Manuel Fernandez went unscathed through his first four batters faced in the seventh and eighth innings. .

The 6-foot-3, 215-pounder eventually put two runners on before Nate Lowe ended the shutout with his ninth home run of the season.

What's Next:

Kyle Funkhouser (1-3, 6.46 ERA) is probable to start Monday in the first of a three-game series against the Columbus Clippers at Fifth Third Field.

Opening pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. (EST).

Hens Notes:

- It was announced Sunday that Trevor Rosenthal was officially activated on the Toledo roster. The former 2015 MLB All-Star signed a minor-league deal with Detroit the day prior after being released by Washington on June 22.

- The Mud Hens finished their two-game nickname change as the Stingers on Saturday, honoring the 180th Fighter Wing, based in Swanton, Ohio.
