Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - The Charlotte Knights walked-off with a 7-6 win in Friday's suspended game, but dropped their originally scheduled matchup on Saturday night by a score of 8-4 to the Norfolk Tides at BB&T Ballpark. The two teams resumed Friday's suspended game at 5:05 p.m. on Saturday and the Knights scored seven runs along the way to win their ninth-straight home game.
Down by a score of 2-0 when the game resumed in the bottom of the first inning on Saturday, the Knights pounded out four runs in the first frame. The inning was highlighted by RBI singles from 1B Matt Skole, RF Paulo Orlando, and DH YermÃ-n Mercedes.
In what proved to be a back-and-forth affair, the Tides tied the game up in the top of the second inning against Charlotte LHP Colton Turner, who allowed just two runs over four innings of work. Turner was on the mound to begin the second inning. LHP Kyle Kubat started the game on Friday before rain and wet grounds suspended the game.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Knights tacked on two runs against the Norfolk bullpen. OF Jacob Scavuzzo launched his first home run with the Knights this season. His solo shot came in the two-run sixth inning. With a 4-2 lead, the Tides battled back to tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the eighth inning on a two-run single from Jesús Sucre. In the bottom of the ninth inning, 2B Danny Mendick hit a sacrifice fly to end the game. Scavuzzo, who led the inning off with a walk, scored the game-winning run for the Knights. The win was Charlotte's 31st at BB&T Ballpark this season.
RHP Jimmy Cordero (3-1, 0.61) earned the win out of the Charlotte bullpen in the first of two games played on Saturday at BB&T Ballpark.
In the nightcap, the two teams once again battled into the later innings. With the game tied at 4-4, the Tides pushed across four runs in the top of the sixth inning to go on for the 8-4 win in a game that was only scheduled for seven innings. RHP Héctor Santiago started for the Knights and allowed four runs on five hits over five innings. RHP Carson Fulmer (1-1, 4.94) gave up all four runs in the sixth inning and was saddled with the loss.
The two teams will conclude their four-game series on Sunday afternoon. RHP Dylan Covey is scheduled to get the start for the Knights in the finale.
Pre-game radio coverage of Sunday's 2:05 p.m. finale is set for 1:50 p.m. on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and CharlotteKnights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action.
