Syracuse Mets Pitcher Chris Mazza Named 2019 International League All-Star
July 6, 2019 - International League (IL1)
Syracuse Mets News Release
Syracuse Mets starting pitcher Chris Mazza has been added to the 2019 International League All-Star Team that will compete against the Pacific Coast League's All-Stars at Southwest University Park in El Paso, TX on Wednesday, July 10th at 9:00 p.m. This is the first time in Mazza's professional career that he has been named an All-Star. The 29-year-old joins Syracuse Mets second baseman Dilson Herrera as Syracuse's two All-Stars this year. Herrera re-signed with the Mets on Friday and will still represent Syracuse in the All-Star Game.
Mazza is having one of the best seasons of his career. The Walnut Creek, CA native made his Major League debut this season on June 29th for the New York Mets against the Atlanta Braves where he allowed just one run in four innings pitched. Mazza has been named International League Pitcher of the Week twice this season and is the only International League player to win a weekly award multiple times this season. In nine starts with Syracuse this year, Mazza has pitched to a 3.81 ERA in 54 and 1/3 innings pitched. Mazza has walked just 13 batters while collecting 49 strikeouts.
"It's an amazing feeling to be selected for the All-Star Game," Mazza said. "I can't wait to get out there and see all the fans and all the other All-Stars and have some fun."
Mazza is in his first year in the New York Mets organization after he was selected in the minor-league phase of the Rule 5 draft this past December from the Seattle Mariners. Mazza began the year in Double-A Binghamton, made two spot starts for Syracuse, and then was promoted to Triple-A full time on May 24th.
