Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Indianapolis, Ind. - At Victory Field on Saturday, the Toledo Mud Hens topped the Indianapolis Indians in extra innings by a score of 9-6, scoring four in the top of the tenth.
With two doubles and two wild pitches, the Mud Hens scored four runs in the top of the tenth to propel them to an extra innings win over the Indianapolis Indians. With the International League rule in action, Ronny Rodriguez was the first to score followed by Dustin Peterson, Mikie Mahtook and Daz Cameron.
In the top of the first inning, Toledo opened up the hit column. With one out, Dawel Lugo continued to be a threat at the plate, sending a double to the left-center gap. A triple off the bat of Rodriguez would score Lugo to give Toledo an early 1-0 lead.
To lead off the Indianapolis half of the first, Cole Tucker drew a walk on five pitches from Toledo starter Kyle Funkhouser. Tucker would advance to third on a single from Erik Gonzalez through the left side of the infield. After an out, Ke'Bryan Hayes singled up the middle, scoring Tucker with Gonzalez moving to third. Kevin Kramer would follow up by drawing a walk to load the bases. However, a barehanded play by Funkhouser turned into a 1-2-3 double play, ending the inning with the score tied at 1-1.
In the top of the second, Mahtook began the inning with a walk, but was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice ball by Kade Scivicque. A wild pitch would allow Scivicque to move up to second. After a strikeout was recorded, Pete Kozma also walked to give Toledo two on with two outs. Jacob Robson would then send a 3-2 pitch to shallow center field, scoring Scivicque and moving Kozma to third. Lugo would then double, scoring Kozma and Robson, but would be thrown out trying for third on the ball home, ending the half of the inning with Toledo leading 4-1.
Indianapolis began the bottom half of the second with a double from Jason Martin. Martin would move up to second with Pablo Reyes reaching first after being hit by a pitch on his hand. Reyes would exit the game, being replaced by Darnell Sweeney. Christian Kelley would then walk to load the bases for the Indians' with no outs. A groundball by Tucker would score Martin, but also turn into a double play, putting a runner at third with two outs for Indianapolis. Gonzalez would follow with a double to left field, scoring Sweeney, cutting the Mud Hens' lead to 4-3.
In the bottom of the third, Hayes reached on a walk, but was picked off by Funkhouser before Kramer singled to left field. Martin would then double off the wall, scoring Kramer, to tie the game, 4-4 before the end of the inning.
After one out was recorded in the top of the fourth, Cameron walked on four pitches to give Toledo a baserunner. Kozma would also walk to put two on for the Mud Hens. However, two outs would end the inning with the score remaining tied.
In the Indians' half of the fourth, Kelley began with a single before Tucker doubled down the first base line to put runners at second and third. After an out was recorded, Polanco walked to load the bases. Kramer would also walk, moving Kelley home to give Indy a 5-4 lead.
Funkhouser would then exit the game with Caleb Thielbar taking over on the mound. Funkhouser went 3.2 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and six walks while striking out two and hitting one batter. Thielbar would get a ground ball to end the inning.
At the start of the fifth, Sean Keselica entered for starter Cam Vieaux, who went four innings, allowing four runs on four hits and four walks while striking out three. For Toledo in the top of the fifth Castro singled, but was forced out at second on a fielder's choice hit by Peterson. However, that would be all the action with the inning ending with Peterson being caught stealing.
The next action would come in the top of the seventh with Pete Kozma singling to leadoff the inning. After an out, Kozma moved up to third on a single by Lugo to left-center followed by a Castro walk to load the bases. A sacrifice fly to left field by Rodriguez would score Kozma, tying the game at 5-5.
With one out in the eighth, Scivicque doubled off the left field wall to give Toledo another runner. A groundball would move Scivicque up to third with two outs, but a ground out would end the inning the score still tied.
At the start of the bottom of the eighth, Bryan Garcia came on to replace Thielbar on the mound for Toledo. Thielbar went 3.1 innings, striking out two while not allowing a base runner. After striking out two, Garcia walked Kelley to give Indianapolis a runner, but a fly ball would end the inning.
In the ninth, the Indians' made a pitching change as well. John Schreiber came on to pitch the ninth for Toledo. Garcia went one inning in relief, allowing one walk while striking out two. Schreiber struck out the first batter he faced before walking Polanco. Rodriguez would end the inning, fielding a groundball, tagging Polanco and throwing to first for a double play, sending the game to extra innings.
With Rodriguez beginning at second base with the International League rule, Peterson hit him in with a double down the third base line. Peterson would move up to third after a wild pitch with no outs. Mahtook would then walk to put runners at the corners for the Mud Hens. With Scivicque at the plate, another wild pitch allowed Peterson to score with Mahtook moving to second. Cameron would then double to score Mahtook, increasing the Toledo lead to 8-5.
Lyons then left due to an injury with outfielder JB Shuck being called on to pitch. Lyons went 1.1 innings, giving up two hits while walking two and striking out one, giving up four runs, three earned. The appearance would be Shuck's fourth of the season as a pitcher, entering with a 0.00 ERA over four innings.
Shuck would be welcomed by a single to Kozma, scoring Cameron. Next, Robson would ground into a fielder's choice, being safe at first with Kozma out at second for the second out of the inning. However, a fly out would end the inning with Toledo leading 9-5.
With Hayes beginning at second and Kramer leading off with a walk, the Indians put two on quickly to start the bottom of the tenth. Eric Wood would then be hit by a pitch to load the bases.
