Klempa Klutch, But Mavs' Win in OT

INDEPENDENCE, MO- The Wichita Thunder lost 4-3 in overtime to the Missouri Mavericks at the Independence Event Center on Saturday night.

Newcomer Bobby Hughes deflected a puck in front of the crease that fluttered over the shoulder of Mavericks' goaltender Charlie Effinger at 6:14. Leading 1-0, Paul Kelly passed the puck from the left corner into the slot, allowing Tomas Klempa to bury a shot under the right corner of the net at 10:40. Scott Campbell stopped all 11 shots he faced in the first.

Missouri scored two goals late in the second to tie the game. At 15:19, former Thunder defenseman Todd Paul lifted a long shot from the blue line that hit the back of the net from just under the crossbar. Jeff Christian tied the game on the power play at 17:39, shooting a puck that clipped Campbell's left arm before bouncing over the goal line.

The Mavericks completed a run of three unanswered goals at 4:14 in the third to take their first lead of the night. Kyle Bochek's shot from behind the goal line deflected off the back of Scott Campbell's right leg and into the net. The Thunder re-tied the game with just 2:28 left in regulation on the second goal of the night from Tomas Klempa. Klempa took the puck from the right corner towards the crease and slipped it through Charlie Effinger's legs for his second goal of the night. Missouri scored just 27 seconds into overtime on a shot from the high slot by Jared Lavender that initially tipped off of Campbell's glove.

Campbell stopped 38 of 42 in the loss. Effinger was 14 of 17 for the win. The Thunder went 0 for 3 on the power play while going 6 for 7 on the penalty kill.
