Allen Americans News Release

SOUTHAVEN, Mississippi - The playoff-bound Allen Americans fell 5-3 in Southaven to the Mississippi RiverKings in a physical battle. The Americans have a 36-14-4 record (76 points).

Defenseman Brandon Straub gave the Americans a quick 1-0 lead 53 seconds into the game. The goal was Straub's first of the season and was sweet liberation after his previous tally was waived off the last time the club visited the DeSoto Civic Center Feb. 2 due to a penalty.

The RiverKings struck back with two goals to take a 2-1 lead before the first intermission. Mississippi's Ken Davis and Stephen Margeson scored at 5:04 and 14:13, respectively.

The Americans and RiverKings have a history of playing hard-hitting games, and tonight was no exception. Defenseman Mike Salekin and Mississippi's Darrell Stoddard dropped the gloves with two minutes left in the opening period.

Even though Allen came out strong in the second, the Americans' penalty kill unit could not stop Bobby Chaumont from scoring at 6:31. Chaumont's tally gave the RiverKings a two-goal lead. 2010 CHL All-Star Bruce Graham fired back with a lamp lighter of his own at 13:11 to cut Mississippi's lead in half. One minute later, Margeson recorded his second of the night on the power play to regain the RiverKings' two-goal lead and bring the score to 4-2. With 3:29 remaining in the middle frame, forward Christian Gaudet fought Stoddard to pump up the Americans. The score remained 4-2 after 40 minutes of play.

The third period was quiet until alternate captain Justin Bowers brought the Americans within one with 1:15 left in the game after Allen pulled goalie Alexandre Vincent to put the extra attacker on the ice. Chaumont sealed the game's fate when he grabbed an empty-net goal with 22 seconds on the clock.

Vincent made 22 saves tonight.

The Americans play two games on the road Tuesday and Thursday in Bossier-Shreveport and Laredo, respectively, before hosting Mississippi Friday and Saturday.
