Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, MS --- The Mississippi RiverKings finished a weekend sweep of opponents at home with a 4-3 victory over the Allen Americans on Saturday, February 27th at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven. Mississippi entered the game off a 7-1 conquest of the Wichita Thunder the night before.
In Saturday's game, Mississippi saw the Americans quickly take the lead in the first minute of the game on a goal from Brandon Straub, but the RiverKings answered with two of their own for a 2-1 lead after one period.
Ken Davis scored his second professional goal in as many nights at 5:04 to tie the game at 1-1, assisted by Andrew Lackner and Tyler Doherty.
Stephen Margeson next gave the RiverKings a 2-1 first intermission lead, scoring his seventh of the season at 14:13, assisted by Bobby Chaumont and Elias Godoy.
Chaumont made the score 3-1 RiverKings on a power play goal at 6:31 of the second period, assisted by Matt Summers and Derek Landmesser. Chaumont scored on a tip of a shot from Landmesser.
Bruce Graham responded with his 24th goal of the year at 13:11 to get the Americans within one at 3-2.
But, the RiverKings used another power play goal to retake the two goal lead going into the second intermission.
Margeson scored his second goal of the night and eighth of the season at 14:10 of the second period, assisted by Chaumont and Godoy. Margeson scored on another tip-in of the shot taken by Chaumont during the power play.
There was no scoring in the third period, until Allen got the game within one late in the contest. Justin Bowers scored an extra attacker goal at 18:45 to make the score 4-3 in favor of the RiverKings.
However, with Allen trying to force the issue again with an empty net, Elias Godoy and Derek Landmesser got the puck to Chaumont, who completed the night with an empty-net goal with 22 seconds left in the game.
Mississippi scored twice in five power play chances, while the Americans were held scoreless in four extra man chances.
The RiverKings were out shot by the Americans 30-27. RiverKings' goaltender Tim Boron stopped 27 shots as his overall record improved to 6-6-2. Alexandre Vincent made 22 saves in seeing his overall mark fall to 9-14-1.
With the win, the RiverKings continue to hold on to fourth place in the CHL Northern Conference with a record of 27-21-7. It was the team's second win against the Americans this season (2-2-1) and second straight overall victory. Mississippi finished the month of February with a 5-5-3 record.
The RiverKings now depart on another four-game road trip, condensed into five days. Mississippi plays at Tulsa Wednesday night, and then plays a weekend series with the Americans in Allen Friday and Saturday, followed by a Sunday afternoon game March 7th at Missouri.
Next home action for the RiverKings will come up March 12th when the defending CHL champion Texas Brahmas visit the DeSoto Civic Center for a 7:05 PM contest.
