Klein Delivers Gem as 'Cats Take Down Otters

TROY, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats (15-13) defeated the Evansville Otters (9-19) 9-2 in the series opener on Tuesday at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

Tri-City opened the scoring in the first. Javeyan Willians worked a walk off Parker Brahms. Williams then stole second. Alec Olund singled, and Williams went to third. The ball was cut off to Jomar Reyes after Olund's single, and he dropped the ball, allowing Williams to score and put the 'Cats on top, 1-0.

Tri-City tacked on a run in the third. Williams walked, and swiped second again. Olund singled in a run to provide the ValleyCats a 2-0 lead.

Evansville threatened in the seventh. Easton Klein walked Randy Bednar, and gave up a double to Pavin Parks to put two runners in scoring position. Anthony Calarco lifted a fly ball to Williams, who made the catch and gunned down Bednar at the plate for his second assist of the season.

Tri-City took advantage of this great defensive play in the bottom of the seventh. Dylan Broderick and Tyson Gingerich each had two-out walks. Leoni De La Cruz entered, and served up a three-run jack to Elvis Peralta, his first of the year, to make it a 5-0 game.

The Otters got on the board in the eighth. Gino Sabatine plunked Jake Green and walked Troy Hamilton before Mason White ripped a two-run double to cut the deficit to 5-2.

The ValleyCats responded in the bottom of the eighth. Williams walked for the third time, Olund was hit by a pitch by Tyler Driver, and Kyle Novak walked to load the bases. Ian Walters grounded out to first, which brought in Williams. Chris Burgess was then issued a free pass, which placed a runner on every square base. Chip Korbacher came in, and allowed an RBI groundout to Broderick. Gingerich followed suit with a two-run single to put the 'Cats ahead, 9-2.

Nathan Medrano finished off the game with a scoreless frame in the ninth, which included a terrific game ending 5-3 double play started by Walters. Klein (2-1) earned the win. He worked seven scoreless frames, yielding two hits and two walks, while striking out two.

Brahms (1-4) received the loss. He went 6.2 innings, giving up four runs, three earned on five hits, walking five, and striking out five.

Tri-City goes for the series win over Evansville tomorrow, Wednesday, June 12 th. First pitch is scheduled for 10 AM.
