New England Knockouts News Release
BROCKTON, MA. - Liam McArthur went 2 for 3 and two RBIs to give Joliet a 5-3 victory over New England on Tuesday night at Campanelli Stadium. The Slammers improved 12-17 while the Knockouts dropped to 10-17.
Prior to the game coach Edmondson talked about the sweep this past weekend against the Sussex County Miners. "It's huge for our confidence. Like I've been saying every time, we've been playing well. We are doing a lot of things right, we just had a couple innings that have gotten away from us. We finally cleaned that up and escaped a couple of the problem areas. We played really well for three days in a row, so hopefully we keep it rolling."
Zac Westcott was the winning pitcher; he pitched for seven innings and only allowed one unearned run, four hits, and one walk while striking out six batters. New England's starting pitcher Casey Bargo ended up with the loss. He pitched 5.2 innings, conceding five hits and four earned runs while also striking out five batters.
Chris Davis led off the game on his second pitch that he saw launched a 366-foot home run to right field, providing the Slammers with an early 1-0 lead. A few batters later with a runner on first and Matthew Warketin facing a 0-2 count, he found the gap in the left-center field, allowing Joliet to have runners positioned in the corners. The team then extended their lead when Jonathan Sierra brought in the game's second run with a sacrifice fly.
In the third inning, the Slammers found themselves in a promising position with runners stationed on the corners and nobody out. Despite the pressure, Bargo showcased his composure as he efficiently navigated the challenge. He retired the next three batters effectively diffusing the potential threat. Notably, he secured the first two outs via the strikeouts.
Bargo retired the first two batters in the fourth but ran into trouble by walking the next two. McArthur took advantage of the situation by hitting a single that went through Jake Boone's diving attempt to catch the ball at second base. This RBI hit allowed Jake Allgeyer to score, extending Jolliet's lead to 3-0.
Allgeyer hit a double to left field with one out and a runner on second, increasing the Slammer's lead to 4-0 in the sixth inning.
The Knockouts scored their first run in the seventh with two outs and runners on second base. Mark Herron Jr. hit a single to center field, bringing in a run and reducing the Slammer's lead to three. In the eighth inning, Joliet's Drew Stengren hit a solid single to right field. Later in the inning, Giovanni Garbella also singled to left field. Then, McArthur came through with a RBI single, extending the Slammers' lead to 5-1.
New England was looking to start a two out rally when Zach May delivered a 3-2 pitch to left center field for a two out double and Herron Jr. followed with a 407 feet two-run home run towards right field. The Knockouts see themselves trailing by two however J.R. DiSarcina struck out to end the ball game.
During the game, Herron Jr. stood out with three hits for the Knockouts, while the trio of Austin White, May and Boone each contributed with a hit.
However, John Cristino's impressive 15-game hitting streak ended as he went 0 for four that night. On the other side, Davis had an outstanding three-hit game for the Slammers, and McArthur had a notable two-hit game. Additionally, five players from the Slammers recorded a hit during the game.
New England used four different relievers as they pitched for 3.1 innings allowing five hits and an earned run.
The Knockouts are back in action on Wednesday at 6:30PM, hosting the Joliet Slammers for game two of their three-game series. Tickets for the contest can be found at https://tickets.knockoutsbaseball.com/.
