Clinton LumberKings News Release

South Bend, IN - Starter Michael Kirkman and reliever Broc Coffman combined on a two-hit performance against South Bend Thursday night, and a three-run second inning provided all the runs the LumberKings would need as they claimed a 5-1 victory. Kirkman did not allow a single hit in his four innings of work, but walked seven batters, including a bases-loaded walk to Greg Thomson that scored the only run of the night for the Silver Hawks.

Broc Coffman picked up the win with five innings of scoreless relief. Coffman (3-1) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out four. The former starter turned long-reliever became the first LumberKing pitcher to reach three wins, and his ERA dropped to 0.47.

The LumberKings scored three runs in the second inning to grab the lead for good. A long single off the right-field wall for Freddie Thon and a walk to K.C. Herren put runners on first and second for Billy Killian. Killian ripped a double off Silver Hawks starter Eddie Baeza, scoring Thon. Herren and Killian would both come home a batter later, as Ben Crabtree chopped a ball to right over the drawn-in infield.

Leading 4-1 in the top of the ninth, LumberKings outfielder Joe Kemp would tack on another insurance run with his first home run of the year. Kemp hit a line shot over the right field wall off South Bend reliever Adam Howard.

Baeza (2-2) took the loss for the Silver Hawks, allowing four runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

The LumberKings and Silver Hawks finish up the four-game series tomorrow, gametime set for 9:30 am central time. Righthander Kyle Rogers will get the call with the L-Kings looking for their first series victory of the year.
