Peoria Chiefs News Release

Dayton, OH - The Peoria Chiefs weren't in awe of rehabbing Cincinnati Reds starter Paul Wilson Thursday night hitting the right-hander hard from the first inning en route to a 6-2 win. With the win the Chiefs are now 11-10 on the season and move into second place just one game behind Kane County.

The Chiefs wasted no time getting to Wilson in the 1st inning. Davy Gregg led off with a single and moved to second on a ground out. Jesus Valdez gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead with a double into the left-field corner.

Dayton came back with a run in the 2nd against Chiefs starter Donnie Veal. BJ Szymanski singled with one out, advanced to second on an error by Veal and stole third. Gerardo Cabrera tied the game with a single to left. In the 3rd, Mike Griffin led off with a single and Paul Janish walked. After a strikeout both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Griffin scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Habelito Hernandez for a 2-1 Dragons lead.

The Chiefs came right back in the top of the 4th against Wilson. Kevin Collins reached on an infield single to first and Ryan Norwood crushed a homer to deep left. The homer was Norwood's 2nd of the season and was just fair inside the pole.

Peoria broke the game open and ended Wilson's night in the 6th. With one out, Brandon Taylor and Mark Reed had back to back singles. Taylor scored on Gregg's basehit and Reed came home when the throw from the outfield got away from catcher Chris Denove. An error at third allowed Gregg to score for a 6-2 Chiefs lead before Jesus Valdez singled sharply to left.

Veal went five innings allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks. The left-hander struck out five and pitched out of a bases-loaded, no out jam in the 4th inning. Jesse Estrada entered in the 6th inning and blanked the Dragons for two innings while allowing three hits. Tim Layden struck out five in his two shutout innings of relief.

Wilson, making his first appearance at any level since having shoulder surgery last June, allowed six runs on 10 hits over seven innings. The right-hander was hit hard all night long and struck out just four. His seven year Minor League career record is now 23-23.
