MWL1 Quad Cities River Bandits

Roth's walkoff blast ends marathon

April 27, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities won a 15-inning epic at John O'Donnell Stadium Thursday night, as Randy Roth bombed his league-leading eighth homer of the season beyond the left field wall to cap a 6-4 win.

The bottom of the 15th began when Tarrence Patterson snagged Bryan Anderson' s liner to center on a diving catch, followed by a full-count walk to Matt Wilkerson. Roth then worked the count to 3-1 before hammering the next pitch for a no-doubt, walkoff two-run homer to left. The 10th round pick out of Southeastern Louisiana State University extended his hitting streak to seven games with the jack, going 1-for-7 on the night.

Quad Cities (10-11) led 4-0 after three innings of play, but watched the lead disappear thanks to more errors and unearned runs. Beloit (11-10) pushed three runs across in the third, only one of which was earned after two miscues in the frame. Another error on a groundball to first with two outs in the ninth allowed pinch-runner Edward Ovalle to tie the game on the third unearned run of the contest given up by the Swing.

With seven more errors on the night, Quad Cities has committed 16 in the first three games of the series and 52 on the season. The pitching staff has allowed 17 runs this series, nine of which have been unearned.

As the game headed into extra innings, the bullpens took over. Jonathan Mikrut, Ashley Hooks, and Trey Hearne combined for six scoreless frames after the ninth, holding the Snappers to just two hits. Hooks, who joined the Swing before Tuesday's game, fanned four in four innings of work. Hearne (2-0) hurled a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the victory.

The Swing scored in each of their first three innings at the plate, jumping out to a 4-0 advantage.

Colby Rasmus continued his hot hitting, extending his streak of consecutive games with a base hit to nine in the first inning. The 19-year-old prospect only needed to see one pitch from Kyle Waldrop, planting it onto the right field berm for his third home run of the year.

In the second inning, Jose Martinez was at first base when Wes Swackhamer lined a base hit into center field. Loaded with spin, the ball took a funky bounce as it landed in front of Patterson, and it skipped past the center fielder allowing Martinez to score all the way from first.

The Swing led 2-0 heading into the bottom of the third, when a leadoff single to right by Daniel Nelson started another rally. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Rasmus drove in another run with a groundball up the middle, giving him five consecutive multi-hit games and eight in his last nine. After stealing second he moved to third on a single by Anderson, and crossed the plate when Wilkerson's bouncer to short was misplayed by Yancarlos Ortiz, giving Quad Cities the four-run lead.

Lost in the marathon was six scoreless innings of work from Swing starter Mark McCormick. The righthander out of Baylor allowed singles to the first two batters of the game, but did not give up a single hit thereafter. McCormick walked six batters on the night, but did not allow any of them to cross the plate and also recorded six punchouts.

Alex Smit (1-1) was the loser, recording only one out before giving up the game-winning home run.

UP NEXT: The Swing will wrap up their series with the Beloit Snappers Friday night, sending RHP Josh Wilson to the mound against LHP Brian Duensing (0-1, 1.93). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and pre-game coverage on WKBF AM-1270 will begin at 6:15.

UPCOMING PROMOTIONS: The Swing of the Quad Cities will close out the month of April with some great promotions. The first 500 fans through the gates on April 28 will be able to take advantage of a poster giveaway courtesy of Miller Lite, and April 29 will feature the first fireworks night of the year, sponsored by i-wireless, WOC, WFXN, and KWQC.
