Peoria Picks Up Win Over Wilson and Dragons 6-2

Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - It really wasn't the ending that 8,027 had hoped for on Thursday night. The Peoria Chiefs (11-10) beat the Dayton Dragons (9-12) and Paul Wilson (LP, 0-1) 6-2. Wilson, on loan from the Cincinnati Reds, was making a rehab start at Fifth Third Field in the third game of a four game series with the Chiefs. At times Wilson looked like a veteran of seven big league seasons, setting down eight in a row at one point. Other times Wilson looked like what he was entering the game, a pitcher that had not started a regular season game at any level since undergoing a shoulder operation in June of 2005.

The Chiefs picked up a pair of first inning hits scoring a run off Wilson, who was starting his first game where the stats counted since May 15, 2005. Davey Gregg singled to right center field and moved into scoring position at second on a ground out. Jesus Valdes knocked home Gregg with an RBI double into the left field corner that gave Peoria a 1-0.

The Dragons battled back and took a 2-1 lead with single runs in the second and third off Chiefs starter Donnie Veal (WP, 2-2). B.J. Szymanski singled and moved to second on an errant pick off throw from Veal and stole third to move 90 feet away with two down in the inning. Gerardo Cabrera plated Szymanski with a single to center and the game was tied at 1-1. Habelito Hernandez gave Dayton a short lived lead with a SAC fly to shallow left center in the third that scored Mike Griffin and the Dragons led 2-1.

Ryan Norwood got the lead back for Peoria in the top of the fourth inning, at 3-2, with a mammoth home run off Wilson over the Dragons Lair in left field. The second long ball of the season for Norwood also scored Kevin Collins, who led the inning off with a single to right.

Dayton had a golden opportunity in the home half of the fourth inning against Veal, when the team loaded the bases with no outs. The Peoria starter got tough and retired Griffin on a shallow fly ball to right, Paul Janish on a pop out to the catcher and Jay Bruce on a fly ball to center. Veal regained his form in his final inning of work, the fifth, retiring the Dragons in order before departing with a 3-2 lead.

The Chiefs put the game away in the seventh inning with scoring three more runs off Wilson. On the night Wilson allowed ten hits and six runs, five earned, with four strikeouts and no walks in 7.0 innings of work.

The Dragons and Chiefs wrap up the series Friday night at Fifth Third Field. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the pre game show at 6:30 PM. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM. LHP Travis Wood (2-0, 3.57 ERA) will get the nod for the Dragons while Peoria counters with RHP Todd Blackford (1-0, 5.49 ERA).
