Burlington Bees News Release
Battle Creek, MI (April 27, 2006) "" The Burlington Bees (9-12) bid to win three in a row for the first time this year was thwarted as the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays (9-12) came from behind twice to win 4-2 at C.O. Brown Stadium tonight. The Bees still lead the series 2-1 with one game left to play tomorrow night.
The Bees got on the board first with a run in the top of the second inning. Kiel Thibault singled and moved to second when Jeff Howell reached on catcher's interference. Thibault moved to third on a flyout to right and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Miguel Vega. Bees' starter Matt Kniginyzky retired the first nine batters he faced to start the game, but the Rays broke through in the top of the fourth. John Matulia led off with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a double by JT Hall to tie the game.
The Bees went back on top against Rays' starter Mike Wlodarczyk in the fifth inning. Vega reached on an error by shortstop Brandon Rousseve. Rousseve made two errors in the game and the Rays committed a season-high four errors in the game. Jose Duarte hit a line drive down the first base line to drive in Vega all the way from first and put the Bees on top 2-1. Wlodarczyk got out of the inning by striking out the next two batters and Duarte was thrown out at the plate trying to score when a pitch in the dirt rolled away from catcher Matt Spring to end the inning. Wlodarczyk (1-1) would work through seven innings and earn his first win of the season.
The Bees' second lead didn't last long. Spring led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to left that tied the game. The Rays took the lead against Kniginyzky (2-1) in the bottom of the sixth. Rousseve tripled to right-center and scored on a single by Matulia to make it 3-2. Ryan Bethel singled to move Matulia to third, but he was thrown out at the plate on a bouncer to first. The inning looked like it was going to end when Rhyne Hughes groundball to second looked like a tailor-made double play, but Valentino Arce bobbled the ball for an error and everyone was safe to load the bases. Bethel drove in the final run with a bouncer to first that went off of Vega's glove initially, but he recovered to get only the out at first. Eliezer Garcia finished the final two innings in relief for the Bees.
The Rays closed the game with a scoreless inning from both Aaron Walker and Greg Dupas, with Dupas earning his second save of the season.
The Bees and Rays wrap up this series tomorrow night at 5:35 Central time. LH Ryan DiPietro (1-0, 3.27) will start for the Bees against LH Jake McGee (1-3, 2.84) for the Rays. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:15.
