
'Caps Get Interim Coach; Tom Brookens Set to Assist Staff

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The Detroit Tigers announced today that Oneonta Tigers Manager Tom Brookens has been named interim coach for the West Michigan Whitecaps. Brookens will retain his role as the manager for Oneonta and will return to the short-season affiliate when the club begins play in June. He is currently in extended spring training with the Tigers in Lakeland, Florida.
Brookens began his coaching career in 2005 as the manager of the Oneonta Tigers and led the club to a Stedler Division championship in the New York-Penn League. He played 12 seasons as an infielder at the major league level with the Tigers (1979-1988), New York Yankees (1989) and Cleveland Indians (1990). He was a member of the Tigers World Series Championship team in 1984. Brookens also served as a Whitecaps Fantasy Camp coach in 2003.
