June 15, 2006 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release
ALTOONA- Pittsburgh Pirates' right-hander Kip Wells, who has not pitched for the Bucs this season after undergoing surgery in early March to repair a blocked artery in his right arm, is expected to make an injury rehabilitation start for the Altoona Curve tonight against the Harrisburg Senators (AA/Washington Nationals) at Blair County Ballpark. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM.
The 29-year old will be making his second of three minor league rehab appearances with Altoona this evening. Last Saturday night, he worked six scoreless innings for Class-A Lynchburg against Salem (Astros). He is scheduled to make his final minor league start on Tuesday for the Triple-A Indianapolis Indians.
Wells is in his fifth season with the Pirates after being acquired in a five-player trade from the Chicago White Sox in December 2001. Since joining Pittsburgh, and subsequently becoming one of the club's top starters, the Texas native has posted a 35-48 record and a 4.07 ERA.
Wells becomes the first Pirates' player to appear at Blair County Ballpark on an injury rehabilitation assignment since Ryan Vogelsong in July 2002. He is the second Bucco to rehab an injury with the Curve in three weeks. Over Memorial Day weekend, first baseman Sean Casey appeared in three games with Altoona while the club was on the road at Erie. Overall, Wells becomes the 19th Pirate in eight seasons to join the Curve on an injury rehab assignment. Among the other prominent Bucs to appear for Curve include Francisco Cordova (May 1999 and April 2001), Jason Schmidt (April 2001) and Kris Benson (May 2002).
Great seats still remain for Thursday's 7:05 PM game at Blair County Ballpark. Fans can purchase tickets by visiting the Blair County Ballpark Ticket Office, by calling (877) 99-CURVE, or by logging on to www.altoonacurve.com.
