New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Trenton, NJ- The New Hampshire Fisher Cats (29-34) beat the Trenton Thunder (32-33) 4-2 Thursday night at Waterfront Park as New Hampshire scored two unearned runs in the 10th inning.
With one out in the inning, shortstop Manny Mayorson reached second base on a fielding error by Trenton right fielder Bronson Sardinha. After first baseman Chip Cannon struck out as a pinch hitter, third baseman Eric Arnold delivered an RBI double to score Mayorson and put New Hampshire on top 3-2. Second baseman Brad Hassey scored Arnold on an RBI single to add an insurance run against righty Jeff Kennard (1-1), who allowed just the two unearned runs on two hits in three and a third innings of relief. He struck out five and did not walk a batter.
Lefty David Purcey was making his first start this season for the Fisher Cats after getting sent down from Triple-A Syracuse and he was touched up for a run in his first inning of work as he walked Sardinha and allowed him to score on an RBI double by designated hitter Randy Ruiz. Purcey ended up allowing two runs on six hits and two walks in five and a third innings with three strikeouts. Ruiz had another RBI hit in the fifth, driving in shortstop J.T. Stotts, who had walked leading off the inning, to give Trenton a 2-0 lead.
Trenton starter Matt DeSalvo held New Hampshire at bay until the sixth when Arnold hit a leadoff double and scored on an RBI single by center fielder Justin Singleton to cut the lead to 2-1. New Hampshire tied it in the seventh as left fielder Adam Lind hit a leadoff single, right fielder David Smith followed with his league-leading 21st double, and designated hitter Erik Kratz scored Lind on a groundout.
Righties Brian Wolfe and Tracy Thorpe (1-0) combined to allow just one hit in four and two thirds scoreless innings of relief.
The Fisher Cats return home to Merchantsauto.com Stadium to begin a four game, three day series with the Portland Sea Dogs (Red Sox) beginning tomorrow night at 6:35 PM. The teams then play a doubleheader on Saturday at 5:05 PM and wrap up the series on Sunday at 1:05 PM.
