Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - While a six-run first inning certainly wasn't enough offense to demoralize the visiting Whitecaps, a three-run eighth officially ended any hopes for a West Michigan comeback as the Clinton LumberKings rolled to an 11-5 victory at Alliant Energy Field. Daniel Carroll went 4-for-5 with a solo home run and two RBI to lead the offense, falling just a triple shy of the cycle.

The Kings came out swinging against right-hander Luis Angel Sanz, scoring six runs on five hits to chase him after just two outs. Luis Nunez singled and advanced all the way home on a stolen base, error and wild pitch. Tim Morris added an RBI double down the right-field line and James Jones also roped a two-run double to right. Carroll followed with a flare double that landed amongst three Whitecaps defenders to score Jones and Gabriel Noriega singled out of the reach of shortstop Hernan Perez to plate the sixth and final run. All six runs were earned to Sanz (L, 1-4).

Henry Contreras added an RBI single in the second and Carroll blasted his sixth home run of the season in the third, but the Whitecaps still found ways to keep it close against right-hander Taylor Stanton. Rob Brantley, Corey Jones and Wade Gaynor all recorded RBI singles to cut the Clinton lead to 8-3.

Stanton got into trouble again in the fifth as Jones doubled, Gaynor walked and Tony Plagman singled to load the bases. Clay Jones ripped a two-out single to center to score two runs, but Carroll's perfect throw to the plate would catch Plagman to end the inning.

Stanton (W, 7-4) yielded five runs on 11 hits over his 5.0 innings, but left-hander Jose Jimenez (H, 3) came on and kept a three-run lead in-tact with 3.0 innings of scoreless, one-hit baseball.

Clinton put the game away with a three-run eighth, all runs coming thanks to Kalian Sams. With Contreras and Jones on base, Sams lifted a 3-1 pitch from left-hander Shawn Teufel deep to the pavilion in left for his 15th home run of the year. The blast extended the lead to 11-5 and proved demoralizing for the Whitecaps.

Right-hander Brandon Josselyn worked a non-save ninth, giving up a hit before striking out Plagman to end the game.

Eight of the nine Clinton starters had hits, led by Carroll's 4-for-5 performance. Sams finished 1-for-3 with three RBI, while Jones drove home two more with a 1-for-5 game. Franklin went 2-for-2, scored twice and stole a season-high three bases.

Corey Jones paced West Michigan's 13-hit attack, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.

The LumberKings (11-9) continue the homestand tomorrow night as South Bend (8-12) comes to town. Left-hander Jimmy Gillheeney (7-6, 2.92) makes his team-leading 19th start in the opener against the Silver Hawks, first pitch scheduled for 6:00 PM.
