Christian Leads Cougars to Sweep of Silver Hawks

Geneva, IL - On a night in which there was a pregame mass celebrated in the outfield, it's only fitting that a Christian did the most damage in the game. It was, in fact, Jason Christian of the Kane County Cougars who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a homer, three runs, and three RBIs to lead to an 8-0 Cougars win and a series sweep of the South Bend Silver Hawks.

The Silver Hawks were shut out in each of the final two games of the series, marking the first time they've been blanked in two straight games this year. South Bend has now been shut out nine times and also swept nine times this year.

Christian had a RBI double and scored a run in the second inning, leading the way in a four run Cougars rally against South Bend starter Andrew Wolcott (LP, 0-2). Wolcott, pitching roughly 30 miles from his home in Grays Lake, Illinois, was touched up for six runs (four earned) over 4.0 innings in his third start with South Bend.

Christian was again a big part of the fourth inning rally, when he led off with a double and scored on a single by Conner Crumbliss to make it a 5-0 game. Crumbliss then stole second and scored on a RBI single from Myrio Richard - his second RBI of the game - to make it 6-0.

Finally, Christian finished out the scoring with a two-run homer against Rafael Quezada (ND) in the fifth inning, lifting the Cougars to an 8-0 lead. Christian doubled his RBI total from three to six in the ballgame.

South Bend's best chance at a run came in the first inning against Kenny Smalley (ND). David Nick doubled with one out, but was thrown out at the plate on Bobby Borchering's single to center. South Bend would not get a runner to third base the rest of the night as they were held to four hits in the game.

Borchering's hit extended his hitting streak to 11 games, his personal best. Matt Davidson saw a 12-game streak come to a close, going 0-for-4 on the night.

Smalley went just 4.1 innings, receiving no decision. Chris Mederos (WP, 3-2) was given the win with 3.2 scoreless innings of relief.

The final leg of the nine game, 11 day road trip starts Saturday evening in Clinton, Iowa when the Silver Hawks battle the Clinton LumberKings at Alliant Energy Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM Eastern Time with RHP Scottie Allen (3-2, 4.40 ERA) going up against LHP Jimmy Gillheeney (7-6, 2.92 ERA).
