
Chiefs Complete Sweep Of Dayton With 10-8 Win Friday

Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs rallied from four runs down to win Friday night in a high-scoring contest, defeating the Dayton Dragons by the final of 10-8. The win completes the sweep of the Dragons and improves the Chiefs to 7-12 in the second half. The Dragons got on the board in the first off starter Ryan Searle. Andrew Means took the very first pitch of the game over the left field fence for a home run. Ryan LaMarre followed with a single and advanced to third on a Henry Rodriguez single. Frank Pfister was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Josh Garton walked to force in a run. Kevyn Feiner singled to center to plate Rodriguez and Pfister while Garton was thrown out at third on the play to end the inning with Dayton leading 4-0. The Chiefs got one back in the bottom of the first off starter Tim Crabbe. Hak-Ju Lee reached on a bunt single, and a throwing error by catcher Chase Weems on the play allowed him to reach second. Logan Watkins reached on a fielding error by first baseman Tommy Nurre that allowed Lee to advance to third, and Matt Cerda grounded into a double play to score Lee and make it 4-1. Dayton got an unearned run off Searle in the second inning. Weems walked and advanced to third on a Rodriguez single. A throwing error by Searle on a pick-off attempt at first base allowed Weems to score and give the Dragons a 5-1 lead. The Chiefs got one back in the third inning. Lee singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by Crabbe on a pick-off attempt. Watkins laid down a sacrifice bunt to put Lee on third and a Justin Bour groundout brought him home to make it 5-2. The high-scoring game continued when the Dragons brought one across in the fourth, still facing Searle. Weems walked and advanced to third on a Means double. LaMarre hit a sacrifice fly to left and Weems just beat the throw from Nelson Perez to make it 6-2. The Chiefs got a pair back in the bottom of the fourth still facing Crabbe. Perez doubled and scored on a Jonathon Mota double. Mota scored later in the inning on a Lee single to center that cut the Dragons lead to 6-4. Dayton got another run in the fifth inning off reliever Larry Suarez. Nurre singled and advanced to second on a Pfister single. A double steal advanced both runners up one base and a Feiner single scored Nurre to make the Dragons' lead 7-4. Another run came across for the Dragons in the sixth inning. LaMarre walked and Rodriguez singled to right. While attempting to throw LaMarre out at third Jae-Hoon Ha's throw struck Lee at shortstop for a throwing error that allowed the run to score and make it 8-4. The Chiefs added three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth off relievers Jason Braun and Pedro Villareal. With Braun on the hill Mario Mercedes singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lee singled to advance Mercedes to third for his fourth hit of the night. Watkins reached first a fielders' choice that froze Mercedes at third and resulted in Lee being thrown out at second. Cerda singled to score Mercedes and put runners on the corners. The Dragons brought in Villareal and Bour singled to score Watkins and put Cerda on third. A wild pitch allowed Cerda to come across the plate for the final run of the inning, cutting the Dayton lead to 8-7. The Chiefs scored three more in the seventh to take the lead for the first time. Perez doubled and Mota was hit by a pitch. A Charles Thomas sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. Lee, who had already tied a career high with four hits, singled to center to easily score Perez and tie the game. Mota barely beat the throw home, sliding past Weems for a 9-8 Chiefs lead. Cerda singled to score Lee and put the Chiefs on top 10-8 before Dayton escaped the inning. Searle pitched four innings and gave up six runs, five earned, on six hits while walking three and striking out eight. Suarez threw two innings and allowed two runs, one earned, one five hits while walking one and striking out two. Jordan Latham (1-2) pitched two shutout innings and struck out two. Corey Martin pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his first save of the season, allowing one walk and striking out one batter.
