Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (July 16, 2010) - On June 29, Whit Merrifield picked up the biggest hit of his amateur career when he singled to right field in the 11th inning of the College World Series's final game to give South Carolina their first college baseball national title. On Friday, he was added to the Bees' active roster.

Merrifield was taken in the ninth round of the June draft by the Royals. He batted .321 with 13 home runs, 12 doubles, 42 RBI, and 12 stolen bases during his junior season. He hails from Advance, North Carolina, and is the son of two former Wake Forest student-athletes. His father, Bill, was the ACC Player of the Year in baseball while there, and his mother, Kissy, played tennis.

The Bees are no stranger to College World Series champions. Last year, fifth-rounder Louis Coleman made his professional debut with the Bees after closing out LSU's national title.

Merrifield and the Bees close out the three-game series with Bowling Green on Big Fun Friday presented by Budweiser. Bring your holiday cheer with you to the ballpark for Christmas Eve in July, and enjoy 16-ounce Bud products all evening long. Gates open at 5:30 with first pitch at 6:30.
