Gateway Grizzlies News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI-Joe Agreste had six RBIs and the Gateway Grizzlies scored three times in the top of the ninth inning Saturday night, but it wasn't enough to get past the Kalamazoo Kings. The Kings defeated the Grizzlies 12-10 in game two of a three-game series at Homer Stryker Field
Trailing 12-7 going into the final inning, the Grizzlies began the inning with four straight hits against Kings reliever Joe Catanese. Breck Draper led off with a bunt single, then Peter Tountas followed with a hit. Brandon Peters drove in two with a single, and Agreste capped his night with an RBI double to left center, scoring Peters from first. Kalamazoo closer Dan Baerlocher, just named to the position prior to the game, retired three straight hitters to leave Agreste on base and seal the win for the Kings.
Kalamazoo (49-28) got out to a 3-0 lead, with three runs on two hits in the first inning. Grizzlies starter Nate Melek walked three in the inning.
The Grizzlies (31-45) got three runs in the third inning to knot the score 3-3. Agreste drove in two with a double and Joseph Scaperotta singled to score Agreste.
The Kings regained the lead, 4-3, thanks to a sacrifice fly by Brandon Anderson in the fourth.
Gateway got four hits in the fifth inning to push four runs across. Agreste added a three-run home run in the inning and the Grizzlies led 7-4 after five.
Melek (4-8) lased into the seventh, when the Kings put up four more runs. Kyle Higgins and Joe Ramos hit back-to-back homers to start the inning. Kalamazoo scored twice more in the seventh to chase Melek and take an 8-7 lead. Melek allowed eight runs on nine hits. He walked six and struck out four.
The Kings ballooned the lead to 12-7 with five two-out runs against Grizzlies reliever Scott Kelly in the eighth.
Agreste, a true rookie from West Virginia University, finished the night 3-4 with the homer and six RBIs. Peters was 3-4 with the two RBIs. Draper and Tountas each had two hits in the loss for the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies will wrap up the three-game series, and the six-game road trip Sunday afternoon in Kalamazoo. First pitch is set for 1:05 pm. Central time.
