LOVES PARK, Ill. - Brandon Cohen and Derrick Walker each hit home runs on Saturday as the Rockford RiverHawks beat the Florence Freedom, 7-5.
The Rockford bullpen combined to hold the Freedom to one run over the final 5 1/3 innings. Elliott Cribby (2-2) pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for the win, in front of a near-sellout crowd of 3,109 at Road Ranger Stadium.
Tim Grogan and Ryan Basham each hit solo home runs, the 10th for each, for the Freedom.
The lead changed hands four times. After Grogan homered to break a scoreless tie in the top of the first inning, the RiverHawks fired back with three runs in the bottom of the first. Cohen broke a scoreless tie with his sixth home run, a two-out, two-run blow to left-center field.
Florence rallied for a run in the second inning and two more in the fourth to take a short-lived 4-3 lead. The RiverHawks regained the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Ross McCoy singled in the tying run and scored the go-ahead run on a Matt Mazurek force play.
Walker led off the sixth inning with his third home run, a towering blast to left. Florence starter Everett Saul (9-7) left a batter later. He gave up six runs on eight hits and took the loss.
In the top of the ninth, Basham hit a one-out homer and two walks put the possible tying runs on base. Ferdin Tejeda got the final two outs and earned his first save.
The finale of the six-game homestand is at 4:05 p.m. Sunday. It's Crunchmaster/Capture Photography/Q98.5 RiverHawks Baseball Card Day. The first 1,000 through the gate receive a complete 2009 team set. It's also Family, when kids can run the bases and players sign autographs following the game.
